Song Lyric: WISDOM

  WISDOM

BRIDGE TO IN:

There have been times when I thought I knew something.

All too often, turned out I did not.

VERSE:

When I was younger I used to be smarter.

When I was young I knew every damned thing.

They say that time might bring us some wisdom

if we are ready for what wisdom might bring.

CHORUS:

You can’t always say where wisdom resides.

It don’t come and go like the wind and the tides.

Wisdom’s not found with a desperate search.

Sometimes it’s found in a bar or a church.

VERSE:

Wisdom might come if we make ourselves ready.

Wisdom won’t come unwelcome to us.

We say we want wisdom and sometimes we do.

Sometimes we just throw it under the bus.

BRIDGE:

There have been times when I thought I knew something.

All too often, turned out I did not.

Wisdom’s elusive, and wisdom don’t care.

Some believe wisdom can only be shared.

Some believe wisdom is there for the taking.

But that is not wisdom’s burden to bear.

You can’t always say where wisdom resides.

It don’t come and go like the wind and the tides.

Wisdom’s not found with a desperate search.

Sometimes it’s found in a bar or a church.

Wisdom can overcome bias and hatred.

Wisdom ain’t something you borrow or lease.

Wisdom might be just around the next corner.

Wisdom’s serenity and wisdom is peace.

Doesn’t cost money, but it never comes cheap.

I had a song about the award winning novel and movie "The Virginian." The theme from the t.v. show was by Percy Faith (I think) and was an instrumental he called "lonesome tree." I wrote lyrics to his theme music, then had a musician write new music to it without knowing where the cadence came from. Three days ago, I had Suno.ai "cover" the song, and the music it created was surprisingly good to my ears. I did eight versions of it and used the one that best fit the lyric for that song. The second best one was what I call an 'orphan instrumental.' Too good to discard, but not the best one for the song. This lyric is what I wrote using that "orphan instrumental" as a basis.

Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit, wisdom is knowing not to use it in a fruit salad.

I've found that, often enough, wisdom is just knowing (and accepting) that it's my own damned fault. 'o)

Hey I like this, mind if I work up some music for it? Already got some chords down.

I've already got music for it, BUT I absolutely don't mind if you work up an alternative. I'd love to hear it. AND. . . I'd love to hear it with your vocals. Go for it.

Oh. One other thing. If you need to tweak some lyrics to make it work, go for it. Do what it takes to make it as good as possible. I promise not to be offended and won't get my feelings hurt. 'o)

By the way. . . the line "all too often we throw her under the bus" is awkward. I rewrote it "Sometimes we just throw her under the bus" which flows better. I didn't realize it hadn't made it onto this version. Don't know why I wrote it as though "wisdom" is feminine, but that's what I felt. Feel free to change it to "it" from "her."

  • Actually I'm still stupid . Looking forward to hearing it guys

  • I'm not sure about this one, though it always pays to hear it first.

First thing is the word wisdom is used a lot. Could pay to get out the thesaurus, or try rephrasing a line or two.

Second is that although it's about wisdom, I didn't really see a message there. What is it about wisdom you're trying to convey? I think it would be stronger if you could focus it down. "Wisdom always hits me when I look the other way" or something like that.

It will be awhile for my version. There is a pretty good list ahead of it.

It will be weeks before I get my version onto soundcloud. Your comment on the song going somewhere was interesting. For me (and your results may vary from mine) Wisdom is an undefineable and inexplicable 'something' that not everybody has. In fact that few people have. I view it in the same way primitive people view "Strong Medicine." I read somewhere that knowledge is facts, but wisdom is "important knowledge." I think it's not as simple as that. The reason the lyric doesn't reach a conclusion is because I haven't reached one, and don't think that seeking one would be productive. Thank you for making me question and think. It's improtant to hear criticism and ask myself WHY I did it like I did it. My thinking on the matter was entirely subconscious until you asked that important question.

  • And as always, yours is the answer that matters!

Not always. An important concept for any artist of any kind is that what the "audience" sees, hears, and interprets (i.e. what you DO communicate) is every bit as real as what you (the artist) INTENDED to communicate. The trick is to keep things "yours" but to realize that it also "belongs" to whoever you wish to hear it. It can be a REAL tricky balance.

I'll also look forward to the version with music, as I felt like at some places, the lyrical rhythm might get a bit awkward, but then again, I'm not able to hear the same rhythm you have in mind, so that's why I'm excited to see how you arrange this. I'll admit I kind of felt similar to RDM about the lyrics at first, that it was just saying "wisdom is this, wisdom isn't that", but I think your answer really explains that, as the whole point is that we don't really know what wisdom is. I do think that some people might struggle to get that message without the explanation you gave, but I'm not sure how to convey it in the lyrics. Maybe making it more personal would help, like RDM suggested.
