We all spent five years together

Plank by plank, and row by row

I, alone, back on this dock now

But for a limb, I guess I’m mostly whole

Oh Cheltenham, I’m finally home

No plot of land to call my own

Walking down these cobblestones

None know the horrors I have known

Gone too long from this place, to find a friendly face

We all spent five years together

Plank by plank, and row by row

I, alone, stand on this street now

But for a limb, I guess I’m mostly whole

A pinned up sleeve, my duffel bag

Grim memories of good friends I had

Mother’s weep for sons now lost, yet for what cost

We all spent five years together

Plank by plank, and row by row

I, alone, stand on this street now

But for a limb, I guess I’m mostly whole…

Oh, Lord of waves and winds so wild,

Recall those lost as bravely sailed,

In victory or stark defeat,

In water's arms, their fate did meet.

Guide them to eternal rest,

In depths where ocean's secrets nest,

Console the hearts that grieve their loss,

And keep them in Your loving cross.

We all spent five years together

Plank by plank, and row by row

I, alone, lie in this field now

But for a limb, I guess I’m mostly whole

  • Kudos for posting something different. It's nice to feel and hear a human touch rather than the overpolished AI that predominates. I enjoyed it.

Strange choice to de-emphasize the chorus, stripping away the accompaniment to a mere echo on the mandolin. I'm not sure it was a good decision. The listener kind of wants the chorus to take off. Here it comes as a kind of interruption.

I would remover the words "I guess" from the last line of the chorus. It would fit the melody better.

Minor point, but if the Cheltenham you refer to is the one in England, and authenticity is important to you, it would be pronounced more like Cheltnum than Chelten-ham.

  • Just listened to the Stirling Castle version, and I have to say I prefer that one. Not just the traditional feel, but the faster tempo too.

But I do like the accompaniment here!

Thanks guys. You are faithful to respond to everything posted. More than I can say for myself.

  • As I commented on your Youtube vid nostalgia is the sea you are sailing here!!! the accordion gives it an atmosphere of old lights,
