The face of poverty

[verse]

I’m but a face in the crowd;

A voice that nobody hears.

I’m screaming but there’s silence.

People ignore that I'm here.

[pre chorus]

Nobody cares that I’m lonely

they don’t notice my tears.

They see me but they dismiss me;

out of their doubt and fear.

chorus

I am the face, I am the face

the face of poverty.

[verse]

They think I want a handout;

say I’m too lazy to work.

They tell me, go take a bath.

They don’t see that their words hurt.

[pre chorus]

Nobody cares that I’m hungry.

no one cares that I’m cold.

They see me but they ignore me;

poke fun of my tattered clothes—

Don’t you see, don’t you see—

[chorus]

I’m am the face, I am the face.

The face of poverty.

[bridge]

The war left me with PTSD.

I have a mental disease.

Does anyone really care to know;

What tragedy befell me?

[verse]

I am by a face in the crowd;

a voice that nobody hears.

I’m screaming but there’s silence.

People ignore that I’m here.

[pre chorus]

Nobody cares that I’m lonely.

They don’t notice my tears.

They see me but they dismiss me

out of their doubt and fear.

[chorus]

I am the face, I am the face;

the face of poverty.

[tag]

I’m a society’s tragedy.

[Instrumental outro]

  • @carroll - really profound lyrics.. the bridge especially, it's sad the vietnam vets, many of whom were drafted was treated really bad when they got out.. I served with a lot of them.

    its certainly a hot topic on homeless especially in Calif , rows of tents everywhere

    Not sure how they will solve the problem . Drugs and booze addictions , big problem

  • @ElvisNash - not to mention mental illness.. not sure if they were mentally ill before or after.. it's sad. commentary, but not new

    Powerful piece Carroll, the feelings of anguish and despair are palpable throughout the song.

    For a lot of these people the social safety net has failed them.

    Another well written song on a topic of relevance.

  • Rather give five bucks to the guy/gal on the corner than to any corporation but knowing it's never gonna be enough. Lotta homeless in the town I live; see 'em lining the street corners every day. Thanks, @carroll for putting it in a song. I'm working on one at the moment, don't know that I'll complete it but the last homeless man I gave a few bucks to told me he was there on that corner 'cuz his house burned down so I'm thinking about using his story but not knowing the full story.

    Anyway, I need to listen now....this one ROCKS! Great job!
