I know this seems long but it is fast so it only runs about 3:15 without an intro.

Horses
© 2012 Christina Desmarteau

Prince Charming and his pal Casanova
Are two lover boys from southern A.K.
One look in their big brown eyes
Makes me melt all up inside
And wish I didn't live so far away
.
Closer to home I love many others
I lay my hands on every stallion that I can
I take the lead and run 'em round,
Heat 'em up then rub 'em down
Until I've got them eating out of my hand
.
I've had this passion since I was a little girl
And every year I get a little more obsessed
They say it isn't ladylike
But my idea of a good time
Is riding hard until we're both out of breath
.
Boys may come, boys may go but horses are forever
Any man who wants to hang around me must remember
When I'm wrapped up in your arms
My heart's out there in the barn
I just thought you should know before we take this any farther
Boy, you know I think that you're important
But you'll always be second to my horses
.
Well, I guess you're not half bad for a human
You're looking farm boy cute in your hat and jeans
Oh, but don't make that mistake
Cowgirls don't like anything fake
Your hands are too soft and your boots are clean
.
And I've seen you driving around in your Tacoma
She's real pretty but watcha gonna do with her?
You've got a tiny little hitch
You can't pull my trailer with it
It's no good to me unless it's got a diesel purr
.
Now if you still think you'd like to get to know me
I think it's only fair I warn you right up front
That I've got farming in my veins
And equines on the brain
The girl you're looking at's already in love
.
Boys may come, boys may go but horses are forever
Any man who wants to hang around me must remember
When I'm wrapped up in your arms
My heart's out there in the barn
I just thought you should know before we take this any farther
Boy, you know I think that you're important
But you'll always be second to my horses
.
The only way it's gonna work
Out in the long term
Is if we feel the same way
I'm looking for someone to say...
.
People come and people go but horses are forever
Let's tie the knot and settle down and live the dream together
Wrapped up in each others arms
We'll roll around out in the barn
And someday if we're blessed we'll find that good keeps getting better
Passing on this love is important
So let's have some kids and raise them up with horses
.
Appaloosas, Palaminos,
Gypsy Vanners, Paso Finos,
Arabians, Egyptians, Belgians,
Mustangs, Morgans, Pintos, Buckskins,
Quarter Horses, Andalusians,
Clydesdales, Percherons and Fresians,
Thoroughbreds and Shetland Ponies,
Mares and stallions,
Colts and fillies.                                                       (fade out)

AHHHHH....   I just figured out how to listen to your a-capella versions of your two songs on reverbnation.

You will find that when the accompaniment is added on to your songs, they will grow longer.  i wrote over 100 songs A-capella before I ever learned to add music.  Some of them got REAL long when I added music.

Others were pared back by people I paid to add musical accompaniment.

If you might like some basic spare accompaniment to work with your vocal treatment (written to your vocals) let me know.  The Horse song would be a little difficult.... but sounds like it would turn out real good.

Let me know if you might like to do that.

That would be awesome! That's what every lyricist hopes for!  But nobody knows better than I do how busy life gets, so if you want to work with it and you have time great, but if you don't that's cool to.  Thanks for the interest!:bigsmile

With your permission, I will capture your a-capella song and record your vocals on my own computer and begin building music around it.

I await your permission.

Just so you are clear on how this will work as far as ownership/authorship, I'm not interested in ownership.   If  you like the accompaniment, you can own it outright.

I will remain the primary "author" of the accompaniment, but will relinquish ownership of it to you for some token consideration.

The "consideration" will take the form of permission to use your performance for advertising purposes only.  That might mean I can use your performance (or my performance of your song) on my site to advertise myself as a songwriter... but I could not (without your expressed permission) perform it at a live event.  Nor could I sell any right to do so to anyone else, or in any way transfer my rights to use your performance for advertising to anyone else.

You will own 100% of the lyrics.  You will own 100% of the accompaniment.  You will own 100% of the song.

But I MUST (by law, custom and ethics) be listed as the "author" of the accompaniment anytime it is credited.

If you have questions about the difference between "ownership" of a song and "authorship" of the same song, just ask me to further clarify.  It's important to understand these concepts, and they can seem complex until they are completely understood.

Anyway, I await your permission.  Please let me know.

You have my permission and my thanks! Now, if only we had a better vocalist!
BTW, I'm LOVING Reverbnation! The local charts section is SO great, isn't it? I had no idea there were so many country artists near me! What a great FREE way to network! Man, it feels so great to talk to other songwriters on there and in here! I'm the only writer in my family and none of my friends write either so sometimes I feel like a black sheep in a heard of white goats... lol

This was a fun listen! And what do you mean "if we had a better vocalist"? I think with some music behind you and a good sound system you would do that song much justice. It is long, but after listening to it and following the theme line I dont know where you would be able to shorten it down any. That would take some work but it has a very fun and sassy melody. Miranda Lambert maybe?

John

Let's talk about the "better vocalist" thing.  Your voice is plenty adequate to carry the songs you are writing.  In fact, I was considering asking you if you might like to sing some songs that I've written that demand a female voice.

That you can credibly sing (and convey a song) A-capella is a pretty strong endorsement.

And when I read your lyrics, I have trouble seeing how some of the lyrics will fit the song... but you make them seamless... meaning you have a real good "sense of a song."

You seem to have no serious limitations with range.

And (unless you are singing A-capella with some accompaniment we aren't hearing or a metronome) you have an almost impossibly good sense of timing.

NO ONE is a good judge of their own voice until they have sung, recorded, and listened to their own voice thousands of times.  It took me years to accept that I have an okay voice.  Ask other people instead of relying on your own judgement.

Your voice is totally capable and servicable.

And I'll now get right to work and probably have you something by this time next week.

If I send you raw music without accompaniment, do you have a way to sing in over the track I send?   I think I remember you have "Audacity".  Is that correct?

Yes I have Audacity. Audacity is a free download, BTW if anyone needs it!
And thanks for the kind words gents! I often record songs I'm writing in my cell phone and when my 2-year-old son gets his hands on it he somehow activates the voice memo playback and I'll hear my electronic rendition suddenly playing... Ugh I get so embarrassed if we're in public! But he smiles and laughs like crazy! lol

Thanks Mike! Funny thing... I really wanted to write it because I love horses... but when I started it I wasn't sure it was going to end up being any good. But one of the most important lessons I learned in art school is not to give up on something just because it doesn't jump out of the gate on the right foot!

I think I only don't because I wrote it... every time I try to sing Luke Bryan's "Country Girl" I get tongue tied... and that's not even super fast! :)
