 Hey everyone!  My friend pointed me to http://www.HowToWriteAGreatSong.com and it has a video which explained the "songwriters formula" used in mainstream music.  I've been using it for a week now, writing new songs and it definitely has made an improvement.  My songs used to lag on and not go somewhere and didn't know why, now they have that little extra umphh... and it's EASY.
