HEAVEN IS A MUSTARD SEED

(c) 2010 Amber Train

Forward [not part of song, just background]:

Ripped from the Gospel of Thomas Logion #20:
The disciples said to Jesus : "Tell us what the Kingdom of Heaven is like." He said to them: "It is like a mustard seed, the smallest of all seeds. But when it falls on tilled soil, it produces a big plant and becomes a shelter for the birds of the sky."

I have this idea that I want to make this a gospel-y/old time tune, but  I can't really envision it yet.  Can you do humor in gospel/old time?  I sure would like to try.  .

V1:
Believin in heaven it sure must feel real nice
But even as a babe, I was never enticed

Quite unsuccessfully my parents tried threatnin
If I didn’t pray, study, be good, then no heaven

But in church it was all choirs angels harps and books
I never heard that heaven had dogs bikes gum or pools

Chorus:
If someone could provide me a better answer
I might just believe it was worth going after
But selling it, even Jesus didn’t succeed
Best he came up with was “its like a mustard seed”

V2:
As I became older the problem got much worse
In heaven no rock booze sex n God forbid you curse

and what if I run into my awful ex-husband
Would I have to then spend eternity beside him?

How ‘bout that sweet grandma livin down the street
She don’t go to church - will she count among the meek?

Chorus:
If someone could provide me a better answer
I might just believe it was worth going after
But selling it, even Jesus didn’t succeed
Best he came up with was “its like a mustard seed”

V3:
I guess as my end nears my heart might start to change
Maybe choirs harps angels books and stuff’ll be my thing

or

what if we’ve all been wrong about what Jesus shared

what if he really meant that

like that old mustard seed its real spicy up there?

I'm sure you can sew humor into the gospel. There are many, many examples of God's humor in his book. Job, Daniel, Moses !! We'll see if God smites you with a lightning bolt first and go from there lol !!!! Funny write !!

I guess I should stay indoors for a bit :)  It came out as a funny write, but I hadn't necessarily started out to write a humorous song.  I was raised in very strict religious household and this really was pretty much what my existential crisis looked like at various times!

Yes, I am sure God has a sense of humor.  He probably laughs all the time at some of the things we say and do, so don't worry, yes, there is humor in Heaven.  He may even laugh at me when I try to sneak through those Pearly Gates.

No, but there were some close calls up in the mountains around my house last night.  BUCKETS of hail coming down and wicked lightning and thunder.  I guess i should have yelled out - I WAS JUST HAVING FUN WITH YOU DUDE!  Actually it was quite beautiful.  I love a good summer storm.

Thats funny, And a bit disconcerting at the same time.  I sat here the other day and watched a thundersorm pound my neighbors house (thats how it happens here in Georgia) and I thought to myself--Reckon what he did??

Yep, God definitely has a sense of humor and Extreme patience.  Everything about Him that I know of Him is Love.  The Parable of the Mustard seed is found in the Gospels of Matt., Mark and Luke.  You raise some interesting questions in your lyric, but it seems to cast more doubt than it does Praise.  True Gospel Music has to contain at least 3 elements of Conveyance in order to qualify as a genuine Gospel song.  Those three elements are the Crucifixion, the burial and the Resurection from the dead.  Not trying to run your song down, but this is the prerequisites of a Gospel song. The Parable of the Mustard seed is speaking of the Kingdom of Heaven, not of the Heavenly city.  Main point is the Kingom of Heaven is growing all the time even from the least of the seeds of Faith planted along our way. If you really want to write a rip roaring Gospel song, try to include these three elements.  By the time you get done with it you will see more joyful anticipation of wanting to be included in its citizenship. Honest opinion no plug or ugliness intended. :)

Terrypicker, I think I'll have to steer clear of gospel then.  lol  But I do appreciate your knowledgeable feedback on the subject!

alytrain, Hey you're welcome my friend.  It's been said that writers should write about things they have first hand knowledge.  Delving into a different or new topic is just another opportunity for gaining more knowledge on a new subject!  Don't give up on Gospel, it's probably one of the most rewarding categories of all! I used to write a lot of Gospel Music, now I just dabble with everything I write. Back in the 80's I actually won some awards for Gospel songwritng. If I hadn't studied things out I wouldn't have known how to approach the subject.  Now, Christian music is not the same as Gospel, by definition Christian Music takes into account any and all facets of the Christian Doctrine/Christian Life.  If you don't want to write about the Gospel then Christian may be more attractive to you.  You have an interesting approach to things I find refreshing and original.  Keep it up! :)
