Hello;
As an intro to my music, I'll give you my personal favorite of my own stuff here.

"Gone Mellow"

Words & Music-John Bowen C2009
Written & recorded in November 2009.  Instrumentation is MIDI.

Piano, Drums & Bass-Yellow Tools
Strings & ensemble-Mixcraft 4.5 library
Vocals recorded on a Zoom MRS802BCD

Final mix done in Samplitude Music Studio version 14

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=1058168&songID=9023321

Lyrics;
Golden dawn
Beautiful morning. I write a song.
Peaceful skies. Picturesque scene makes me realize
The view out my window no words could capture.

Time goes by so fast I never took in the view

Of all the colors there are in the world
How fast they change. Every day a new.
I want to hold them in my heart forever
Cos I’ve gone mellow
Yes, I’ve gone mellow

Sad to see so much demand I put into “me”

To please a world that could not be pleased
and I came unfurled
I watched half my life pass without a purpose

Life goes so fast. Before we realize, the best has past

Never to see again the gifts we missed. Fullfilling times en massed.
The emptiness awoke me to the joy I was missing
Cos I’ve gone mellow
Yes, I’ve gone mellow

I feel alive.

A new day has come. A new sun shines
My tears have dried
The world seems brighter
My heart is light
I look at my life in a different way
Cos I’ve gone mellow
Yes, I’ve gone mellow

C 2009 Fuzzy Puppy Tunes

Hope you enjoy it!:)

A good selection to show folks John.  This is also one of my favorites you have ever done.  Listening to it right now.

Hey John ... have you changed this up a bit?  Around the 4:15 mark seems different then the last time I heard it, and maybe the ending as well.  For some reason, I don't remember that section.  Love it though.  Good tune.

Thanks Jim!:)
Although there have been several changes to the mix on this, and you may have heard an earlier one, there wasn't anything added content wise.  That particular section is how it's always been.  But I did change the ending to extend the last piano chord.

I knew for sure the end was a bit different, just wasn't sure on the mid part.  I was listening while doing other things here in the office ... maybe I was distrated enough that the nice change at the 4:15 area brought me back to 100 % focus on the song.

James.

Yes, brenda's got class ... she's even written one or two with me before.  We still have one in the can waiting for the guy who does the music to get off his butt ... oh wait, that's me.

John, I think the last place I listened to this song was on a different site then Soundclick.  Soundclick gives it a bit of a thinner sound I think.  But the beauty of the song comes through strong.

I like the pic of Brenda on her one page where she's just sitting at the dining room table with the kitchen in the background.  That's the kind of thing I like to see.  Just plain folks making music and doing what they love.  She also has a very sweet voice and I like how she has some other people showcasing her tunes.  That one guy sounds just like Willie Nelson!!

Soundclick sounds thinner probably because they only allow files encoded to a max of 128 kbps on a free account.  MySpace I can take up to 320 and Reverbnation I can go up to 192.

I'm currently reworking my pages. I took everything down, but it will all be back up eventually.

This is a fantastic song with a powerful message that rings true.  The vocal is top notch.  You pulled it off quite well.  I really enjoyed listening to this.

Wow! What a beautiful song! Vocals from the heart is what I hear John, you have great range and sing with a lot of passion! I lovvve the strings in it!!! I'm a big fan of strings, they seem to add so much to certain songs and I have to say this is one of them that strings dresses up quite nicely! Great set of lyrics too! I'm really looking forward to hearing more from you John...especially after this one! :D

Thanks so much Roy and SS!:D

Just a word of caution though.  Don't get too used to the "Positive" lyric in my music.  This song is a token, ie one of the few in my catalogue with a positive and upbeat message.  Most of my lyrics tend to be of the down variety.  Not in the "death metal" sense, of course, but more of what you may think of as "down-hearted", "heart broken", and "unrequited love" kind of thing.  Not unlike some of the "Soap Opera" type country tunes out there.;)

Roy-I have relatives in Texarkana.  Visited down there in the late 60s.   Nice place!

Sam-You say you're new at writing songs!  Sounds to me like you've been doing it for a while.

Thanks again.

;)

Oops! Sorry John, somewhere along the way I must have said something to mislead you because I'm definitely not new to the songwriting game! Of course some of the stuff I write sometimes probably looks as though I am, but I've actually been at it for quite sometime now! However! It wasn't until I joined the forum a couple of years ago that I finally began learning how to do it the right way. These folks here have been wonderful examples of how it's suppose to be done and have always been there to set me straight when I've wandered off the beaten path.  But, to be honest with you I'm still learning and I find that I learn something new here just about everyday, that's beneficial to me. I don't always apply it but at least I'm learning what I'm suppose to be doing with it! :? lol  Sorry for the mix up, John. :)

No problem with that, Sara.  In fact, I'm sorry that I misunderstood.  Either way, your music sounds very good and very professional.

BTW-I have an aunt and a cousin who live in Hartwell GA, which is in the northern part of the state.  Are you anywhere close to there?

:)JB

It's roughly 125 miles from where I live John. We've been to Lake Hartwell a few times to go fishing but it's been eons since we were last up that way.

Hey John, great song and the sound is incredible... I love the vocal effects.  I listened to it several times and listening on the speakers the mix sounds excellent.  However, when I listened with headphones there are places in the music where I kept wanting to hear something in the center.  The far left and right panning seemed to leave silence in it that needed to be filled.  Having said that, you could say that I don't get out much and as a result I'm ignorant of how this style of music is mixed.  I took a look at Mixcraft downloads and plan on trying it out... I'm in need of strings and the ones you used from the Mixcraft library sound really good.  Great song, I enjoyed listening!

Dennis;

Thanks so much for your feedback.  I actually tried a mix on this that I called the "Sun Travel" mix in which I used an automated mix profile to have the lead vocal start in the far right (east) and gradually move to to the far left (west).  Sun rises in the east and sets in the west, get it?  But I really didn't care how that sounded when all was said and done.:?

I think Mixcraft is an excellent program for the price ($70.00).  Yeah, you can get better string sounds but you pay for better too.  The next best one up would be the Garritan Personal Orchestra (approx $175.00) which was made from actual sampling.

For the price, Mixcraft isn't bad at all.  I actually use two MIDI sequencer/studio programs.  The other, besides MC is Samplitude Music Studio 14.  I like the mixer in that one but the brass and strings in it's library are not as good MC's, so I figured out how to used both programs together.  It can be done, but you have to make sure the tempos and keys match each other in the project in order for them to synch. Generally, I use Samplitude's library for drums, bass and keyboard, but MC for the strings.  I convert all the MIDI files to WAVs before the final mix.

:)JB

Hi John,

Welcome to TSF!

I really enjoyed listening to "Gone Mellow" just now! You are skillful in building your vocal melodies and the instruments to support them. Nice voice too! Happy to have you with us on TSF. I hope you'll spend plenty of time with us here!

 Nice work!

-Troy

Y'all quit talking about me!  he he just kiddin'.  Wonder if the Willie souldalike is Steve Sledge?

Anyway, I come up with so many dark or depessing lyrics but seldom have them set to music.  Think most of us like to experiment with many different subjects.
