I was beginning to think that nobody liked to write fun lyrics like the book full that I have unfinished.  Now I see Bobby Joe is here.  Finally somebody that wants to have fun.  I write in several different genres but always write the goofy ones in country style.:D   I don't know why....it must be the Ray Stevens in me.

So Bobby have a go at finishing this one that I was writing about a friend of mine that was depressed about not having enough time to spend on fun things and with his wife

Hap at it.  You won't hurt my feelings

(A little Brooks & Dunn, Boot Scootin' type feeling.  Not the melody just the feeling...LOL)

Thanks, Mike F.  :)  I'll give it a shot and see what I can come up with.  I'll try to stay in the spirit of what you've started.  Some of my stuff gets really off the wall.  Thanks for the chance to have a little more fun.

How about a duet maybe?  Here's a tweaked first verse and a second verse for the female to sing.  If not, I'll try something else.

"When Does The Fun Begin"
(©2006 Frisbey/Beckley)

Lately I've been thinkin'
And it's crossed my mind
Our crazy fun-o-meter
Is runnin' way behind
This workin' nights and sleepin' days
Is wearin' mighty thin
So where's that ticket-taker
When does the fun begin

Baby, I can hear you
And I sure agree
We both need some time out
For our sanity
We can't keep goin' on like this
On the outside lookin' in
So where's that ticket-taker
When does the fun begin

A duet eh?  For some reason as soon as you said duet, I got George Jones and Margie Singleton in my head.....It really has nothing to do with this song...but it replaces Pam Tillis that has been there all day. :cool:

So who you were thinkin' about?

As we develop this song and bring it to life, I'd like to share observations on the process itself, hopefully to create a learning experience for all, including myself.  [I'll use brackets like these in which to place "asides."]

Mike F., regarding the duet, no one in particular.  I just heard a second, female voice singing the song.  I'm not locked into it, though.  [#1 songwriting rule for me - listen.]

Rather than jump right into the hook as it is, it's always good for a co-writer to test it out.  Is it as good as it can be?  "When Does The Fun Begin" seems kind of passive to me.  Do we want that kind of song, or do we want something a little more energetic and dramatic to belt out in the chorus?  [Could go either way, IMO.]

What else could we twist that hook idea into?  The depressed guy who is almost whining "When Does The Fun Begin" is slightly comical to me, because we all are responsible for our states of mind, IMO.  We control our own states of mind by: (1) the questions we ask ourselves, (2) what we tell ourselves (internally), and (3) the mental images we create for ourselves.  I don't mean to sound like Tony Robbins, but hey ...

Anyway, when I think of being responsible, I think of the old saying "The Buck Stops Here."  Aha!  We can twist that to "The Fun Starts Here" or "The Fun Starts Now."  More empowering, at least.  I get more energy and an uptempo feel from it.  It could be about a guy or girl taking control of their lives (is that too much of a fantasy these days?  ;)  ) and doing something to put back the fun into their relationship.

The hook choice is very important, IMO, Mike F., so you might want to think about it and state your case for either one, or come up with a third direction to take.  We want a strong foundation on which to build our chorus, so that our "song house" will stand up against the "elements."

Mike F., if you think I'm off on a tangent here, just pull me back in and point out what you want to focus on.  I think my thought processes help me write well, but that doesn't mean I'm always on target or in sync with others.  Thanks.  :D

Mike F., I thought about your original hook on the way to work and this popped out.  See what you think.

Chorus:
When does the fun begin
When does it start
It's been too long since we
Opened up our hearts
Life is a carnival
Love is a ride
When does the fun begin
Look in my eyes

We can still go in any direction you want to.  I'm not locked into any one way of writing it yet.  But we'll figure it out.  :)

BJ, I can't hear the meter to the chorus after the verse, can you give me a heads up?  Also, are we repeating "When does the fun begin" too many times?

We could also twist the thing from him being married to a girlfriend who won't give him the time of day or commit.  She essentially is the ticket-taker.

If we leave the original wording as first posted, I know several state or county fairs that could use it as a theme song. :D:D  Wow, a jingle...whoopee.

I am swamped at work here....so I will honestly jump in as soon as I can catch a break.

Hi, Mike.  :)  Sorry, but I didn't realize you had a state or county fair type theme song in mind.  I was thinking more about a man and woman's relationship.  And there I was, gettin' all heavy with the Tony Robbins' stuff.  Boy, I sure missed the boat.  :D

Let me retry tuning into it and see what I come up with.  I've got to work a little OT tomorrow and finish testing some software, but I've got some time tonight and on Sunday for sure.

BJ,

NAW...it's OK  I was just relaying what somebody told me.  It can go anyway you want.  Like I said.....hap at it.

I just have another song that is really similiar and it is hard to concentrate on this one...LOL.  I can't multitask on other lyrics when I am writing...I can on other things but not that.  The lyrics I am working on usually consume me until done...been that way now for 30 years.  A real pain sometimes. :shock:

I'll get serious in a bit and we'll knock it out of the ballpark.

Mike F., here's a rough partial on a girlfriend who won't give in.  I've heard this can happen.  ;)

"When Does The Fun Begin"
(©2006 Frisbey/Beckley)

We've been goin' together
For three months, almost four
But all I get is a peck on the cheek
When I walk her to her door
I've tried hard to be civil
And act like a gentleman
But my Dr. Jekyll wants her Mrs. Hyde
And it's about to get out of hand

Chorus:
When does the fun begin
When does the lovin' start
I've bought her everything
To fool any foolish heart
I've lied and lied to her
Without much success
So when does the fun begin
Never I guess

How about:

Chorus:
When does the fun begin?
Where does the lovin' start?
Well I can't think of a single thing
Or the reason we're apart
I been hangin' on to this 'ol dream
Just waitin' for your when
Well honey it's time to make up you mind
So when does the fun begin?

Something like this?

That's good, Mike F., if you want to play it straight.  I like to push the envelope a bit with the offbeat and rakish.  Just ask Jeff about our first co-write.  LOL  A WalMart parking lot will never be the same in his mind again.

Speaking of Jeff, he may have some good ideas to help develop it.  If you do, Jeff, jump right in here, ol' buddy.

I'm a limited writer, in that I write mainly from hooks.  If one really grabs me, I can write a lyric very fast, but, if not, I can write for hours and never get anywhere.  Sorry I can't be more helpful.  If I come up with something fitting, though, I'll run it by you.

Thanks for understanding, Mike F.  My brain is fried from having to go in to work today.  Let 'er stew is a good idea.

BTW, I just signed up at SW101 to have a look around.  "Fang City" over there, from what I've seen so far.  Anyone else have the same opinion?

Jeff impresses me with his prolificness, so he may have an idea or two and jump in here.  chow!  :D

Bobby: You are exactly right !!!
I have yet to go to Wal-Mart w/o
thinking about that line you came
up with. LOL

As far as help, give me a few
to tidy up something else and
I'll see if I can add anything
prolific LOL.

Bobby, the fangs are out over there
better be careful ...... !!!!!!

You guys know Buck Owens (God rest his soul)
recorded a song entitled "Let the fun begin"
don't you???

Don't know if this is the route you
wanna take with this, but here's a shot
in the dark.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When does the fun begin?
Frisbey/Beckley/Knight
ver 1:
I met her down at the country club
she was hotter than a tropical breeze (A)
thought I might be falling in love
was gettin mighty weak in the knees (A)
I knew I was gettin lucky tonight
she was dancing up real close to me (A)
Then this hotshot cowboy showed up
tried his level best to cut in (B)
I said you better take a step back boy
or they'll be notifying your next of kin (B)
Chorus:
When does the fun begin?
Where does the brawlin' start? (A)
I'm about to switch to overdrive
you're just a smartass without the smarts (A)
This ole dog has seen better days
but my patience is wearin thin (B)
It's time to make up your mind
when does the fun begin? (B)
ver 2:
That ole boy got his bluff called
when I knocked him to the floor (A)
Since then, that lady and I are an item
for three months, almost four (A)
But all I get is a peck on the cheek
When I walk her to her door (A)
I've tried hard to be civil
And act like a gentle man (B)
But my Dr. Jekyll wants his Mrs. Hyde
And it's about to get out of hand (B)
Chorus:
When does the fun begin?
Where does the lovin' start? (A)
I'm about to switch to overdrive
baby can you feel the sparks (A)
This dog won't stay under the porch long
your gonna have to let him in (B)
Baby it's time to make up your mind
when does the fun begin? (B)
