This one is from earlier this year with Magne Kolstad....Thanks for listening

Kevin

Nineteen Smiles
© 2009 Kevin Pearson / Magne Kolstad

V1
He hears the headmaster say
Big smile on the count of three
The flash bulb popping in his face
Seventy years later He still see's

V2
Black and white eight by ten
Nineteen kids one small town
He remembers every one of them
he hates to take that picture down

CHORUS
He marks an X on the glass
One for every Soul that's passed
For the boys that he loved like brothers
Some X's were harder than others
For the girl he married that same fall
He never got around to using that X at all
Nineteen smiles, frozen there in time
Forever the Class of nineteen thirty nine
Nineteen friends, together in life
They will meet again, if the fate is kind

V3
He points to Johnny Carlson
Says we walked to school together
Got a letter from one of his grandsons
Says that we lost him last December

CHORUS
He marks an X on the glass
One for every Soul that's passed
For the boys that he loved like brothers
Some X's were harder than others
For the girl he married that same fall
He never got around to using that X at all
Nineteen smiles, frozen there in time
Forever the Class of nineteen thirty
Nineteen friends, together in life
They will meet again, if the fate is kind

BRIDGE
I said Dad, if you have the time
Tell me about these faces
all the names and all the places
and for a while they all seemed so alive

CHORUS (old)
He marks an X on the glass
One for every soul that's passed
He's Not sure about Jenny Smith
If she's gone thats news to him
So There's two X's missing
From the Class of nineteen thirty nine
and there's Nineteen smiles
frozen right there in time
Nineteen friends, together in life
They will meet again, if the fate is kind

This is very cool Kevin. Magne did a soulful job on it too. Reminded me of Springsteen in a way, or Bryan Adams. The structure of the song even resembles U2.

Great stuff!

Very cool concept! I like the idea and can almost see the framed class picture with X's on the glass over the classmates who passed away.

Nice job!

I think I may have heard this somewhere before.  Did you post it  on  another far distant forum?  But anyhow, really enjoyed listening to it and following the story along.  Ah, memories, what would do without them.

Curtis,

Thanks for listening. After I sent this to Troy I realized there is a revised version and Magne is still working on something produced a little bit further. He's the guy that did the cello for us by the way.

Troy
I appreciate you taking the time to listen and comment. Here's the interesting part. This is another (in a long line of songs about my father) He actually has "X's" on the glass of his 1939 High School graduation picture. He's 88 now and it's not that he's keeping score just keeping track and he is the last one alive from that class. Of course seeing that picture all marked up stirred the songwriter (or whatever that is in me) and I wrote these lyrics.I never counted the faces in the picture though and when I played it for him he went and got the picture out and re-counted them himself..lol. I said don't tell me now he said "you were pretty close"...lol. Actually 21.

John
Thanks for listening. Magne is from Denmark and he's a really cool guy. A College professor of all things don't know why he'd hang around me but I'm glad he does.

Sara,
As always Thanks for listening and for your never ending support. I guess I've pretty much told the story above I hope you get the chance to read through this post.

Roy,
Yeah this one was up back in Feb/March in other places. Magne's still working up a produced version so it may come back around again.

Merry Christmas
Kevin

Kevin, I have indeed just finished reading your post. As you can see by the time on my last night's post, it was almost one in the morning when I was finally able to settle down and make it over to open mic. I was running back and forth taking care of PM's I have been neglecting and putting some last minute touch-ups on one of my entries...as well as trying to tie up some loose ends pretaining our upcoming Christmas open mic.  So I listened and left  a comment so that you would indeed know that I had listened to it. But I had every intention of coming back sometimes today, as I didn't fully say all I wanted to say about it. So I'll be doing that right here and right now....

Kevin, is this a co-write between you and Mange or is this handy-work yours alone? Either way I see YOU written all over it and know the original idea did come from you! You, my good friend, have the soul of a songwriter! Some of your writes are almost as if your muse is from another time and place and... MAN, does it ever make for some terrific lyrics!!! But this one is so relatable for so many of us, I even went to  bed last night thinking about some of my old school chums as a result of listening to it and I haven't done that in years!!! When you can do that to folks just by listening to a something you wrote, then I feel you have gotten what you were aiming for, so job well done!!! :)

That was quite enjoyable Kevin. Excellent storytelling. I like Magne Kolstad style.

Art,

Yeah I think Magne poured some heart and soul into this one. Not sure how it would have come out without all that.

Sara,
Thanks for coming back. I did write these lyrics and Magne just sent me the song out of the blue. I think he re-wrote or added the last line in the chorus and he may have had to sand off a few rough corners too. I don't worry too much about that stuff or even major changes and ideas from a co-writer since we're in it together at that point..sink or swim.

Rob,
Thanks Magne's pretty cool does alot of different styles. He wrote and recorded one a while back -a drunk guy singing in a bar- sounds drunk the whole time- it's really hilarious and clever- even recored background noise from a real bar.

James,
Thanks for the comments. I admire your's and everyone elses talent here so it's great to hear from you all.

Merry Chistmas

Holiday Kevin

Great attitude Kevin! It's something we 'lyricist only'  have to learn right of the bat. But 9 times out of 10 the changes are for the better anyway! The old saying is....two heads are better than one...and in songwriting I have found this to be very, very true.

Nice job Kevin and Magne. Another great song with a style that I have come to appreciate more and more with each song that you submit. A style of storytelling that I hold in high regard. When I seen that you had a new song to share... I had great expectations and you did not disappoint!

Very good.  Your vox had a Rolling Stones "Ruby Tuesday" kinda feel.  Very touching lyrics.

Sara,
Thanks again.

Owen,
I appreciate you taking the time to listen and respond.

Gary,
Nice to meet you. Thanks for the pat on the back. I'm sure there are more than a few that run the other way when they see my name...lol.

Dennis,
Thanks I'll tell Magne. He's still working up a fully produced version of this one. I'll let you know when he gets there.

wavehellomachine,
Hi nice to meet you too. I appreciate you listening and commenting thank you very much.

Merry Christmas
Kevin
