I posted this song in the lyrics lounge awhile back.  it now has music, and can be heard on my Jamwave site if you care to listen.  I think it's the 9th song down on the player.  http://jamwave.com/hackett  ......I maybe could of named this one Runaway Guitar being as the second track guitar gets a little running away from me....LOLOL...I was making it up as I went along and it shows in spots.....Oh well, I never claimed to be nor am I trying to be a performer.  I just shoot from the hip and hope for the best...LOL

RUNAWAY CHILD

© 2008 John Hackett

VERSE:

I WAS AWAY FOR AWHILE

JUST LIKE A RUNAWAY CHILD

THOUGHT I KNEW ALL THE ANSWERS

MY LIFE WAS RUNNING WILD

BUT YOU NEVER GAVE UP ON ME ( NO, NO )

THOUGH I PUSHED YOU AWAY

THEN MY EYES DID FINALLY SEE

IT'S YOU THAT LIGHTS MY WAY.

CHORUS:

HOLD ME CLOSE

SO I CAN'T SLIP AWAY

HOLD ME CLOSE

SO I DON'T GO ASTRAY

KEEP ME IN YOUR HOLY EMBRACE

IN THE WARM HOLD OF YOUR SAVING GRACE

VERSE:

TROUBLED DOWN IN MY SOUL

I PUSHED IT DEEPER INSIDE

IT NEARLY BROKE MY MIND

I THOUGHT I SURLY WOULD DIE

THEN YOU CAME UNTO ME  (YEAH, YEAH)

WITH A HOPE I COULDN'T DENY

MY HEART AGAIN COULD SEE

THAT LOVING TEAR IN YOUR EYE

CHORUS:

HOLD ME CLOSE

SO I CAN'T SLIP AWAY

HOLD ME CLOSE

SO I DON'T GO ASTRAY

KEEP ME IN YOUR HOLY EMBRACE

IN THE WARM HOLD OF YOUR SAVING GRACE

I WAS AWAY FOR AWHILE

JUST LIKE A RUNAWAY CHILD

LIKE A RUNAWAY CHILD

THEN YOU LED ME HOME  (LEAD ME HOME)

YEAH YOU LED ME HOME  (LEAD ME HOME)

Hey John, I love it, it's as simple as that.  Now, I told Curtis to throw his BIAB away because I loved his style and acoustic work.  I think you should throw away jamstudio and any kind of drum or backing tracks you have.  You have great style and those things will only cramp that style... you and your guitar are the music and your music does not need to be enhanced... it is full from the feeling you put into it and leaves nothing to be desired.  I also think that if you free yourself from feeling the need to add other elements, you will feel much more at ease and it will show in your songs.

Others might have a different opinion and I understand that this is just mine.  But, if I had the style and could play like you, or Curtis, or Jordy, I would not have bought BIAB... I would pick my guitar up and play!

I was having a hard time figuring out the beat and tempo of this, and I think I now understand why.  I think you guys hit on it when you said to get rid of the jam studio.  The problem is matching up what you're writing with the selections they give you, which isn't always a match.

You have a unique style, which I would think would make it very hard to find the right matching style in BIAB or any other canned accompaniment software.  I agree with the others, just do your thing.  It's original and it's you.

DD

Thanks Dennis and DunedinDragon.......Truth is I didn't use Jamstudio or any other program on this.....I did however use a dumb drum loop from my masterwriter program, and i agree it's not a great fit....Other then that It's just me on my multitracker with 2 guitar tracks and 2 vocal tracks.

Yeah, I knew you didn't use jamstudio on this one but I could hear the drums.  I just had to say what I had to say... hope it wasn't too rough!

John, it turned out beautiful! Happy to see you finally gave it life because I have always liked this set of lyrics...especially the chorus.  Enjoyed the listen and you did a very good job on the performance, it was indeed heartfelt and sincere. :)

Didn't hear this song on your page, but I did hear So Long Ago. I liked it. Kind of has a Jimmy Buffett feel to it. I think you write well and also sound pretty good. Keep it going, my friend.:D

I like this a lot John.  To my ear, some really good, strong parts.  I also like the sound of your voice, and I think the guitar embellishment, while it could be more understated, has a cool effect.  When I go back into my archives now and then, I'm glad to find a song like this with a good overall idea and a verse and chorus that can be fine-tuned and strengthened.  If it was me, I'd lose the stop/start style and just sing it through, and I'd also tweak the chorus.  'Hold me close' is so strong, both the words and melody line, that I'd build that up, repeat it one more time in the chorus (so three times), but the 3rd time change the register (up a notch if you know what I mean) and then close with just 'in the warm hold of your saving grace.'  Also, not sure if a the word 'to' would come off better than the archaic 'unto.'  Anyways, sounds like you had fun putting it together and it's a great message.  Nice piece.  Thanks for sharing.
