Here's one more song I'd like to share with you folks here at TSF.

This may be the most emotionally satisfying song I've ever written.  It was prompted by a lady in my church who one day made a plea for help in writing to her son.  On his 18th birthday he went out to celebrate with some friends, ended up getting into trouble and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.  Being the father of two boys myself this touched very close to home, and it made me reflect on how easy it is to extend our compassion to some, but not to others.  The next week I sat down and wrote this song.  To me it's about determining where our compassion begins and ends, and the song came out, I think, exactly where I meant it to be.  It's not very often that happens.

At any rate, I appreciate your insights and feedback on this.  It's meant to lead the listener in one direction on the first verse, then reveal in the second verse that their assumptions made in the first verse may not have been completely accurate.

DD

-----------Lyrics-------------

Long Way From Home
© 2009 D. George

Here's to all of the Mother's sons who will not be home tonight.
Whose mothers pray each and every day that their child will be alright.
And for the fathers with heavy hearts with daughters far away.
Who only hope for a single word to know that everything's okay.

And here's to all of the children who miss their parent's touch.
With colored pictures on their walls to show they miss them very much.
For all the brothers and sisters, who miss their best of friends.
And for the ones that dream each and every night of coming home once again.

God of all mercy, we ask you keep these from harm.
Grant them the peace of being held within your loving arms
And light up the darkness so they don't feel alone.
God bless the hearts who are a long way from home.

When we search our hearts for compassion, is it only for the brave?
Do we trade our love for a hardened heart when someone's life has gone astray?
Do we only care for the heroes, or do we care for those that fall?
Whether in a land very far away or a land of concrete walls.

There is no limit to mercy, when offered from God's hands
And that we care for each other, is all that he demands.
God's love isn't just for the righteous, or for the one that's without sin.
And the love we show to the least of these, is the love we show to him.

God of all mercy, we ask you keep these from harm.
Grant them the peace of being held within your loving arms
And light up the darkness so they don't feel alone.
God bless the hearts who are a long way from home.

Wow...did I learn a good lesson here.

They say to make sure you give your ears a rest after doing a mix for a day or so, because your ears become oblivious to certain things.  Guess that happened here.  I mixed this song and then uploaded it originally.  I came back and re-listened and a bunch of stuff really jumped out at me (piano too tinny, background voices to far back in the mix, power guitar too dominant).  Sheesh...live and learn.

At any rate, got a new mix that seems a lot better.  Hopefully I can get some feedback on this.  I really appreciate anything you guys might have on this.

DD, this one made me cry.  I'm the mother of three sons, whom I would proudly have to classify as 'good boys' who have never gotten into any kind of serious trouble...but...we're all well aware of how easily something like this can, and does, happen.  Your story, as well as your song, tugged at my heart strings and made me feel sad for both the mother and the son and all those whose lives this mishap has forever changed.

BTW, I really like your song and I thoroughly enjoyed the listen. :)

DD,

I really dig this song.  I can see where it would be emotionally satisfying -- you ask some tough questions and draw some really penetrating insights from them.  Great job -- and what's even better you do it very tunefully.   :)   The song held my interest all the way through based on the story unfolding.  Very nice.  Love the 2nd verse!

Blessings, Ryan

Thanks Dennis and Ryan for the listen and feedback.

And Ryan, I really appreciate you got the message from the 2nd verse. You'd be surprised how many people listen and don't catch on to the question being asked...or...maybe they don't want to have to answer that question??? I know I would maybe fit into that crowd until I heard this lady speak at church and realized how stingy I'd been with my compassion.

I've really learned a lot over the last couple of weeks about my approach to tracking and mixing from my latest endeavor (My Father's House - http://www.thesongwritersforum.com/forum/view_topic.php?id=4983&forum_id=14 ), so I hope to re-mix this song when I get back from my current trip to North Carolina to get the sound closer to where I want it to be. I'll post the remix once I'm done.

DD

It seems I'm just now finding your music, guess I've been away too long.  This is a very beautiful song and I thoroughly enjoyed it.  Keep 'em coming.

Thanks Roy. This is actually one of the songs I've put aside to re-record now that I'm working with Band In A Box. I really think I can do a much better job on this. It probably won't be any time real soon, but in the next couple of months. I'll post it up again once I get it re-done.
