A HERO IN MY EYES
© 2009 / JOHN HACKETT

VERSE:
MY HEART ON MY SLEEVE
SO HARD TO BELIEVE
YOU WERE WAITING ON THAT MIDNIGHT TRAIN
I LONGED FOR YOU TO STAY
BUT I SAW YOUR EYES SAY
I CAN'T TAKE ANOTHER DAY OF THE PAIN

VERSE:
I WATCHED AND I  PRAYED
AS YOU SLIPPED AWAY
IN THE SILENCE OF THE NIGHT
ON THAT TRAIN  BOUND FOR GLORY
WITH THE ANGELS YOU RIDE
NO LONGER A NEED FOR THE FIGHT

CHORUS:
EVEN THOUGH IT HURTS SO BAD
I'M THANKFUL
FOR THE TIME WE HAD
CAN'T IMAGINE WHERE
MY LIFE WOULD HAVE BEEN
WITHOUT YOU

VERSE:
I'LL MISS YOU, YOU KNOW
AND MY MEMORIES THEY'LL GROW
AS EACH BREATH ACHES DEEP IN MY CHEST
THE BATTLE YOU FOUGHT
COURAGEOUSLY SO
DESERVING NOW OF THE REST

DID YOU REALIZE
YOU WERE A HERO IN MY EYES
DID YOU REALIZE
YOU WERE A HERO

CHORUS:
EVEN THOUGH IT HURTS SO BAD
I'M THANKFUL
FOR THE TIME WE HAD
CAN'T IMAGINE WHERE
MY LIFE WOULD HAVE BEEN
WITHOUT YOU

DID YOU REALIZE
YOU WERE A HERO IN MY EYES

Thanks Art.....Interesting when writing this I wasn't writing about a soldier passing but rather had in mind any loved one.  A father, Mother, Brother, Sister, Wife or Husband etc.......I think it's so cool to see what a listener hears in something that I wrote.  The Soldier passing definitely fits in the lyric as well, so thanks for that......and thanks for listening.

Maybe it's the times, but I thought it was about a soldier as well. There are a lot of hero's taking train rides deserving the rest these days. This was nice John, the guitar set the mood good.

I didn't feel it about a soldier at all, more of a loved one, like a wife.  Maybe the line about the battle you fought may have been construed as a soldier, but when one dies, it is used quite a bit about anyone.  But anyway, great song John.  Good job.

John, you did a marvelous job on this...the singing, the music and the production are all great! It sounds really, really good and the guitar...WOW...it did indeed set the mood.  Enjoyed it very much. :)

Hey John, great job on it.  I gotta tell you, I'm adopting this one... it's one that I could have written for my brother.  It captures just about everything that I felt about him.  He did know however that he was a hero in my eyes... because I was able to tell him :)

Just a great song John. I of course liked the guitar especially. It had a nice Chris Isaak/Mark Knopfler feel to it.

Well done man!

Nice Work, John!

The guitar immediately sets the tone/feel of this song. It has a nice calmness to it which fits the lyrics.

I'm curious.... did you use a doubling effect on the vocals or did you (my guess) record 2 separate vocal tracks.

Yep, more great guitar work.  I LOVE the tone you get from your guitar.  Vocals are fantastic and a very good song.  I think you did a fine job when you can have people think of it a number of ways.

Nice, James.

Barry and Roy...Thanks for listening and the nice comments.

Sara ...your way to kind...Thanks!.  I am glad you enjoyed it

Dennis...Thanks man...It's nice to know something I wrote can strike a chord with someone.  To me that's the ultimate compliment.

Curtis.... I appreciate your nice words.  Thanks for listening....But ummm mentioning me in the same breath as Knopfler is kinda like a sacrilege isn't it?...LOLOL

Troy...thanks..and you are correct in your guess...I did record 2 separate vocal tracks on this.

The music lends hope to the sadness evoked by the lyrics.
Very nicely done.

Peace

I got a Mark Knopfler feel from the lead guitar too. It really set the mood for the piece. Very thoughtful and evocative!
