As You Pass By
Pearson/Campbell ©2009

V1
On top of the hill at Rollin’ Oaks
There's a line of weathered marble stones
One chiseled with two simple lines
that serve to remind how short our time

CHORUS
As You pass by…. think of me
As I am now…., so you shall be
Written so long ago
by a man I didn't know
and no matter how high…. I fly
In the end I'll be so easy to find
For his words will be…..so easy to see
So As you pass by…. think of me

V2
Though I don’t recall his family name
Or know the fears he faced when his time came
It is in his last request that I find
A simple hope that I shall keep for all time

BRIDGE
Until that stone washes away
These final thoughts will be here to say
Before your time to depart… give all the love that’s in your heart
Cause in the end…… that love is all you are

CHORUS
As You pass by…. think of me
As I am now…., so you shall be
Written so long ago
By a man I didn't know
And no matter how high…. I fly
In the end I'll be so easy to find
For his words shall be…. so easy to see
So As you pass by…. think of me
"

I just have to say........

WOW!

Your melodic and tempo changes in Chorus lines 3 and 7.......... are masterful! That's the key to your song right there. It breaks away at the perfect point and brings us back when we are ready.

The whole story/concept is thought provoking too. You did well not to just come right out and say 'cemetery' or 'headstone' or 'epitaph'. You led us through with just the right words to keep us interested in figuring it out on our own.

BTW: The fade at the end fits the song perfectly.

Nicely done!:clappingface

Curtis,

My wife is the toughest judge on earth. Let me say that again "The toughest". Trust me on that... .she really likes this song and she said.... are ready for this "you sound a lot like like Cat Stevens to her" now I don't know if you were shooting for that but I'd take that as a real big compliment from her.

Thanks
Kevin

Not to worry I'm glad to be close enough to grab onto Curtis's coat tail...one this one. I thought he was good but he's better than that,

Kevin

Thanks guys. Do you see my big Ole head in that picture to the left? Heck, it wouldn't even fit in that picture any more it's gotten so big.:D

I'm glad it all worked out. I had a really good inspirational lyric to work with, and that made it special for me.

Thanks to everyone for all your support, and thank you Troy for allowing the late night entry........again.

I knew this was gonna be good from the snippet we got to hear... and I was right!  You outdid yourself Curtis, I'm impressed with the feeling you put into it and you know that I love acoustic versions of songs... to me, it doesn't get any better than this!  Excellent, my man!

Thank you Dennis. You inspired me with your first statement after I posted the idea. After that, I never thought about doing it any other way.

I'll add a WOW to this as well!  Great great job on this tune.  Good guitaring and good singing, oh and good lyrics!!!

Done did good.  I do have one small suggestion just cause I thought of it :-).  Was wondering about in the first verse where you have the line of stones, then words written out in two simple lines.  Wonder if it may sit better with saying row of stones and leaving the word line for that third, ahem, line.  Very minor but it crossed my mind.

Fantastic guys.

James.

Thank you James, and you are so right about that change. I think Kevin even had "row" in that first line, but I thought it didn't sing as well. He could've slapped my hand on that one, because I never even realized the redundancy of that word. And singing it to myself now, it sounds just fine to use "row".

I will change that for sure now.

Thanks James!

Yeah, this one is alright.  Did I say alright?  I meant to say ALRIGHT......emphasize the ALRIGHT.  Cat Stevens maybe, James Taylor maybe, or maybe just Curtis doing his thing like we knew he could.  I know Kevin is proud of his one too.  Great co-write guys.

Thank you Roy.

As James suggested, I have changed line 2 in V1 to "row" instead of "line". Kevin had wisely changed that at one time, and I thought it didn't sing as well. It turns out that it sings just fine. He probably knew it should have been changed, but didn't want to interfere with the tunnel vision I had going at the time......maybe he'll learn how to handle me on the next one. :D

The song has been changed on my soundclick page. As I understand it, I can't change it on my post without screwing up the player.

Here's a link to the changed version.

Great job guys...wow, a song with a meaning.  What are you guys doing...living in the past?  Stick the words to this one in your back pocket and maybe someday folks will start thinking again and they will need songs like this!  Maybe Alan Jackson can do it when he gets tired of singing about still liking white bread and baloney sandwiches, or whatever that last crap he put out was about!

I really enjoyed the listen!

Thanks Don. Kevin has posted this on a few other sites to get some feedback from the hardcores.
I'm just happy that I was able to create music that was on par with the lyric.

I LOVE this song, glad to hear it again!!  I do have a suggestion:

that serve to remind how short our time

If you guys are going to be seriously pitching this song, which you should, I suggest fixing that
one line.  It is not worded conversationally and if you'll notice all the lines in verse two are.
It would be a simple fix and I'm telling you this because I sat in front of the publishers at Ash Street
Music as they read along with the lyric sheet.  They pointed out two lines that needed to be reworded for that very reason.

Thank you Brenda, I'm good with changing that line. You mean something like:

"The last wishes of a man blah blah blah (something that rhymes with "lines")?

Oh Kevvvvvvin! Come out come out wherever you are........

Again, thank you Brenda. I appreciate you taking the time to offer suggestions, and this is a good one.:D

You are very welcome!  I always wish that I could be of more help but critiquing is difficult for me because I consider music to be an art form and in art there are no rules, anything goes.

Yeah, in order for that line to be conversational, you'd have to have "remind us of how short our time is" but you don't want to end with is.  You two will come up with somethin' I'm sure.  Or it just might be fine the way it is, others didn't seem to mind it.
