She Devilin' Queen
Down in the Bayou near New Orleans
She Devilin' woman called Betty Jean
She will haunt any man and take his soul
Cajun Devil a Heart Broken Queen
Way back in eighteen hundred and seventeen
A Woman was Killed.. bloody sight on halloween
She walks this cajun town, lookin' for the man
Who loved and left her broken-hearted soul
She Devilin' woman, called Betty Jean
She gets dressed up and goes down town
On every Eeerie dark scary, Halloween
She will flash her cold and wicked smile
Lookin', Sexy, Hot and deadly mean
She devilin' woman will rattle her bones
She's on the prowl to break-up your homes
She goes hauntin' for the married man
Who killed poor poor ole' Betty Jean
She still haunts the streets of the Bayou
Known as the Cold Broken Hearted Queen
She Devilin' lost soul called Betty Jean
Be careful, out late at night on Halloween
She Devilin' Woman will take your Soul
She will Scream in a hauntin' Way.. Cry Why Why!
Sing this in Legator Eerie Tones.... (Cajun Blues Maybe)
Note: I am not going to enter this in the Halloween contest..
My song structure is not good enough.. I thought someone
might enjoy reading it..For a Halloween.........Booooooo! lol
Enjoy, "The She Devilin' Queen"of New Orleans.

Frances, When the title of this song caught my eye in the lobby I just had to come look! And as I sat here reading it I kept wondering why it wasn't in the Halloween contest! Then I got to the bottom and you said you weren't going to enter it! Well, I don't know why not! LOL It's perfect for the contest! You might want to reconsider that, Miss Frances, this is good! Frances, I'm thinking about buying some books on song structure and lyric writing. I'd like to branch-out a little and learn more about these areas too! If I come across anything that I feel will help us I'll let you know.
But, in the meantime, please don't let that keep you from writing your songs!!!! You always seem to come up with good stories to write songs about and as you know that's the first step...and not always easy....a good hook is sometimes hard to come by! But, song structure can be learned. It wasn't until I became a member of the fourm that I learned about bridges and lifts and tags, turnarounds, outtros, and the like...and I had been writing songs off and on since the late 60's. LOL It seems I had been doing some of it, but I had no clue I was doing it or what they were called! But, do like I do...ask questions! There are a lot of people in here that are very good at song structure and I know there is someone, somewhere, who is willing to help! I would offer, but, I'm still learning myself, so I don't feel I'm qualified to be a coach at this time. LOL
But, in a post you made to Mike in the TSF News you signed off on that post by saying....A Little South of Heaven. Is that a song of yours? If it isn't it should be!!!! What a fantatic hook!
I also saw somewhere that you are writing a song called "Room At The Table" I'm looking forward to that one! Thanksgiving is a special holiday and a song about it would be great!

 Hi SundownSam,
Thank you so much for your comments. I live near a Books-A-Million,
and they have several books by Jason Blume, and others..I have a
few. I believe it's a childhood thing, when I need to take my songs
serious, I freeze up.. I grew up in a large family, and learned early
to wait my turn. Not expect to be the center of attention and etc.
You mentioned other song-ideas.. 'Room At The Table'..Yes it could
be a great Thanksgiving song. I started to write it, but I couldn't
finish it...I don't want it to go to waste. So feel free to go for it...
Basic idea: Picture a child remembering Thankgiving . All the great
times families spend together.. Great Meals, times and childrens play.
Example: There was a young boy, who lived down the street
His daddy lost his job, they didn't have enough to eat
so we invited them home for suppertime, and
made "Room At The Table' . (True meaning of Thanksgiving) etc..
With your style and the qualities you have, I bet you could paint some wonderful scenes.. That was the reason I posted it, so someone might see a song within it.
Somewhere South of Heaven, (Not a song)

Hi SundownSam, I was just having some fun, when I wrote the lyrics. I'm not good at song structure for my songs..I didn't realize this, until I posted some songs on another forum. They all have good storylines, but fall short of what it takes, to set them to music. Thanks for your comments. They mean a great deal to me.. Have a Howlin' Good Time, Fran........
Hi Fran...........
Sorry to horn in........but I jus' GOTTA intervene here.
I'd like to tell you something about my philosophy on music.
1. Music = Art
2. Art is subject to it's creator's decisions........in other words........Artist = Creator
3. Other definitions of creator: inventor, instigator, god or goddess
4 In my music world...........Artist (me!) = Creator (goddess!)
Theory and techniques are fine to learn. I'm not downing structure. It is what it is..........and can be a great and fabulous tool. But that's ALL it is. I shudder to think what would have happened to Mozart......Bach .......and all the other 'greats' if they'd never challenged those things.
If you feel the need to write..........you ARE a writer. If you feel the need to write songs........you ARE a songwriter. Not everyone will like, or understand your music,.........but that doesn't change the fact that it's STILL music. Whoever gave the type criticism that made you feel otherwise..........WAS DEAD WRONG. All the structure and theory training in the world STILL would not make someone with no creativity a good songwriter.
Have confidence in yourself dear. After all..........you ARE a songwriting goddess!...........

 Hi lissaw70,
Thank you, so much for your comments. Your words are
very important..It was not my intention to distract from
anyone. Criticism can damage folks, and we sometimes
don't even realize what may be the underlying cause of
not doing the very best we can.. You ladies are special,
and I am blessed to have met you....
Somewhere south of Heaven,
Fran

Frances, You haven't distracted from anyone! We're here because we want to be!
Frances, I think Lissa has just given you some wonderful...wonderful advice!!!! And I'll tell you a little secret...she had to kick me in the booty shortly after I became a member here!!! Seeing all of these great songs and meeting all of these talented songwriters, I was just a bit intimidated... and having been out of the loop for almost twenty years, well, I was really starting to doubt I could do this! I mentioned this to Lissa one day and, girl, I'm here to tell you...she gave my hiney a thorough raking over!!! You see where I am, don't ya? LOL
I agree with Lissa about whoever it was that made you feel like you feel about writing your songs! You said it came from another forum....I knew that wouldn't have happened here! I've only been here for three months, but I assure you in that length of time I've come to know that this is not how they operate here!!! Everyone here will give you honest critique and opinions....and suggestions... but it will be tendered with encouragment... not discouragment! So, please put that behind you! You are a good songwriter!
Frances, it makes me feel really good that you are offering me this beautiful Thanksgiving write that you have underway! But, after seeing what you have already done with it there is no doubt in my mind that you can finish it.... and that it will be fantastic when it's completed!!! We all freeze up sometimes! If you have to lay it aside for a while then do that! Gosh, I have a song that took me a over a year to write and Danny has one that took him three years to write! Sometimes the muse just doesn't visit us exactly when we want her too! LOL
But, the song is there I can see it...just take your time and write it!! Hey, if it's not ready for this Thanksgiving.... there's always next Thanksgiving!!! LOL
And Frances, I tell you what I would like to do if you're game! If you are interested in collaborating on "Somewhere South of Heaven" when the holidays are over I would love to team with you and see what we can come up with! Not gonna write it by myself though, we gotta do it together..OK? Let me know what you think about this!
Sam

Hi SundownSam,
Your comments made me cry.. I have written more than
500 songs. They are stories of folks, I have met in all
walks of my life, but they need work. I understand the
concept of V/V/C/V/Bridge/Lift/tag and etc..Note counts,
but it's easier said than done...You have given me some
great advice, and I do intend to get some books and take
my songs to a new level.. The answer is Yes! I believe it
could be a great song..To be honest, it was just a positive
way to sign off...Thank you for the offer...It means a lot.
Stars Glitter,
Fran

500 SONGS!!! Geez whiz, I am extremely impressed!!! Man, what a file...you've been just a wee-bit busy!!!
Didn't mean to make you cry! But, I am very glad to hear you are interested in the collab offer! I wish I could do it sooner, but I just don't see being able to undertake the project until the holidays are all tucked away. But, I'm really looking forward to it!
I've heard a few things here and there about the James Blume book and I think I want to get that one first. There is also another one...I can't remember the name of it right off the top of my head...but I know where to go find out and when I do I'll yell back at ya. I think we can only better ourselves in trying to take our song writing to a new level. I know I'm ready to learn some new techniques and it sounds like you are too!
Sam
P.S. Oops!!! I just now realized I said, A Little South of Heaven, earlier instead of, Somewhere South of Heaven! Sorry!

 Hi SundownSam,
Don't get to impressed, cause notice I didn't say they
were well written...lol I have been sittin' on this locked
box of songs, like a 'Chicken' sittin' on some Golden eggs.
Do you think, Lissa might want to be involved with this?
I appreciate the time you girls took to give me some help..
Dreams happen,
Fran

Well, girls...this turned out very nice!!! Looks like it's a GO!!!
I really like how all of this came together!!! And, Frances, Lissa's right, when that muse hits her she can throw those lines atcha faster than you can read 'em!!! So, prepare to protect yourself, this is gonna be a wild ride!!!
(Lissa, let's try to be on our best behavior and not scare Miss Frances too much, else she might not invite us back!!!)
Very excited about this... ladies!!!!

Hi SundownSam,
Thank you for all the time you spent helping me yesterday. I will try
to follow-up on the great advice..I'm excited about the collab. The way
you worded the phrase, was good. "A little South of Heaven", cause it
could be a loved one making their trip to Heaven..And they tip their wing
as if to say goodbye... or the other way "Somewhere South of Heaven",
could be someone living in a paradise situation. They hope to see loveones
later on. But we will work on this after the Holidays! I am so glad that Lissa,
wants to join our (Dreamin' Big Team)..It's great to know she is quick with
words, because I'm not...My Gift is unique hook-lines, storylines and etc.
You had a great Hook-line, yesterday...." Didn't Mean To Make You Cry".
Or "Don't Make Me Cry" Nuff Said!!!
Have a blessed day,
Frances

Well, Frances, I never!!! Yep, Didn't Mean To Make You Cry or Don't Make Me Cry is a very interesting hook...but I would have never noticed it! Glad you did though!!! At the rate we're going, ladies, we should have enough to keep us busy for a while! LOL
Lissa, is very quick with the come-backs...but I'm not either Frances! It takes me about a week to think of a decent comeback and by that time the moment has longed passed! LOL And you are so right about the gift of "hooks" you can certainly come up with 'em! I can't say I've got a specific talent unless you call the gift-of-gab a talent!!! LOL I just know I love writing songs and now that I have people to share them with I love it even more!
Hey, I like both the little snippets of each version of the hook... and song-to-come...that you typed out there, goodness, we already have a start here. Tell you what... I don't think we are going to be able to contain oursleves until after the holidays...LOL.. so I'm about to send you my co-writng email address and we can go ahead and start putting any ideas we have on file. So check your PM shortly! Lissa, you already have my email so if you have something as well let us know! Of course, we all need to keep a copy in files though, so we can see what we got! We'll work that out!
Sam
