This is something that has been bouncing around in my head for a hook but I don't have a lot to go with it. If someone would like to get involved in cowriting this one I would love to see your ideas for this thing. I thought about going the other way with it as well, something like...If you can't hang with us great big dogs, then you need to stay on the porch. As if through the course of a conversation.
Running with The Big Dogs
Barry Williams
The rent I've paid on this old bar stool
bought its owner a new car
tonight I'm here alone and everything I own
is sitting right there on the bar
I’ve paid the price been married three times
and three times I’ve been divorced
Cause I was running with the great big dogs
when I should of stayed on the porch
I drank like Hank and smoked like Willie
showed off my assets like a real Hillbilly
nothing to show but that brand new porche
cause I been running with them great big dogs
wish I’d just stayed on the porch

Jus' a suggestion..........thought I'd throw it to ya before I forgot it.........LOL

Lissa. WWMD, I will never forget that, that's a great way to look at things. Especialy if your trying to write some lyrics. I like the ball and chain idea, maybe something more like being off or on your leash.
Maybe something ike..........
Here I sit on this old bar stool
cause tonight I'm off the leash
laughing drinking acting the fool
staying till they make me leave
I've done my time with all three wives
and twice now I've been divorced
tonight I'm running with the big dogs
had to jump down off the porch
I'm gonna drink like Hank and smoke like Willie
painting this town red I'll party till I'm silly
if some gal asks me to dance I will say ofcourse
tonight I'm running with the great big dogs
I had to get down off that porch
I know there'll be hell to pay when I pull up on the lawn
truth be told it'll probaby be early tommorow morn
when I'm done running with these great big dogs
I'll go back to sleep on the porch

Dunno if you've thought about using a more structured chorus.........
Here's what I came up with...........
I'm gonna run.........run with the big dogs
Gonna light this town with a torch
I'm gonna run.......run with the big dogs
Yep....I think it's time to get off of this porch

I like your idea for the chorus, but I'm not sure I can hear it the way you wrote it, maybe something like this........
I'm going running with the big dogs
my old flames got a brand new torch
I'm going running with them great big dogs
it's time I climbed down off the porch

Hey Red - the thought I mentioned in the PM was this:
I've done my time with all three wives
and three times I've been divorced
I finally chewed through those chains
and jumped down off the porch
to fit in with Lissa's idea about the ball and chain, but I guess that sort of gets rid of the big dogs reference. Oh well, I'll keep thinking.

I like it
I've done my time with all three wives
and three times I've been divorced
I finally chewed through those chains
and jumped down off the porch
What do you think of...
I've done my time with all three wives
and three times I've been divorced
got myself free of all my chains
and jumped down off the porch

How about these words
When I got thru paintin the town
with nothin to show but being a clown
I had some fun , and acted silly
yea! I thought could drink like Hank
And smoke like Willy
Nobody to answer to ,but myself
Got tired of waitin on the shelve
Got off the Porch at the break of day
went into town , wanted to play
got tired of chewin on the same old bone
cause man don`t livel by bread alone
And if that pretty little thing ask me to dance
I`ll smile and say I`ll take that chance
running with the big dogs , is just fair game
Its ever man , just doing his thing
Keep or sweep its up to you
Just some lines I thought up , I really like where you are going with song/and I want to hear it when you put it together//Granny(Barbara)

Some pretty good ideas there Granny, I like alot of it, but I don't think I want this one to have remourse for his actions. this ones all about breaking out, breaking free, and living wild.
