I had an idea a while back, and I wanted to mention it here and ask the moderators if a contest with a cash prize for the winner is permitted on the site.
What I would like to do is submit one of my original song's individual midi tracks for each instrument and the vocal tracks (with zero effects added). The contest would involve participants mixing and EQing each raw track, pitch-correcting the vocal tracks, and producing/mastering the final version of the song. Anyone could enter, and we would collectively judge the final results in the song forum.
I would pay the winner a prize. I'm thinking $100 USD, via Paypal (or something similar).
I do not want my arrangement changed, but I would be open to a change in instrumentation in spots (e.g., maybe a steel guitar, vice acoustic guitars), but I would like to have the final say on any change in instrumentation.
What say ye, moderators? If it's not allowed, that's not a problem. It doesn't hurt to ask. :-D
Cheers,

I don't see why it cant happen.
If you are putting up the prize money, then you will need to set the rules, dates, and generally run the show, though Andrea and I will provide any help or guidance you ask for.
I'm not sure how many entries you will receive. You may need to consider this in advance. If (for example) there are only two submissions would you still go ahead? You could consider a poll or question in advance to sound it out.
But in general, sure.

What's the point of mixing and EQing individual tracks?
The whole point of mix and EQ is in the context of a whole song.
Furthermore, why create the aggravation of a contest, for yourself and any potential others?
I speak from experience.
And I personally wouldn't want to do all that work for the chance to be paid. (win)
I can recommend an engineer that might do the project for $100.
Then you will have it done professionally. And a heck of a lot quicker.
Or, check out the work of Nothingless. If they are capable of doing the work, award the project to them.

Hi Motorist,
the chance to be paid would be a little encouragement also for me, since it's more probable to loose than to win.
But to mix a song of another person it's an opportunity to learn and to share the results and discuss and build community.
And icystorm would have many versions to choose from for only 100 USD.
A decent mixing+mastering of a professional would cost at least 200USD (check on Soundbetter or similar).
People that mix and master a song for 100USD aren't any more professional than me...
I argue he was referring to the work on single tracks as a description, but he meant the mixing of the whole song, or am I wrong Icystorm?
