(This was in the wrong place for a critique---oops!)
This came about directly after learning and singing a great (actually religious) inspirational song: Climb Every Mountain (Rodgers-Hammerstein, The Sound of Music). I've had some feelings I've wanted to express in song about self-belief and people trying to deter you b/c of THEIR failings---but staying the course, focusing on your vision. That's the path to possible achievement in my view, though everyone needs friends and help.
I'd written a jazz instrumental (what I'd mostly done in the early years---wrote my 1st lyric only in '03, and there are still Hondas and Toyotas from that year running well. Not THAT long ago's my point). So this is my 2nd inspirational song (the 1st is probably my best-known: You're My Foundation, co-written with the late Jimmy Norman for the Jazz Foundation of America. It's posted here somewhere).
But this is the 1st time I've really put my personal views in about self-belief; hoping; dreaming; not being sidetracked or influenced by the probably jealous. It ain't like it's something new---2 guys named Arlen and Harburg did a little thing called Somewhere Over the Rainbow once. This little bauble has a Gospel beat---and I'm glad that though I came fresh off Rodgers-Hammerstein I didn't try to copy them. (Crashing is NOT fun)
Here's the lyric and file of the handwritten sheet. The Finale' I'll post when my student transcribes it:
Believe Joel Fass © 2020 Exemplar (ASCAP)
Believe, just believe
Don’t let hopes or dreams ever leave
Be a laser, beaming your vision
And believe----just believe
Strive, always strive
Though others settle just to survive
Let not rule nor fool deter you
But just strive, always strive
When dreams just wither away
The broken just call it a day
But drink from the spring from where dreams are sprung
And I promise that you’ll stay forever young---
Believe in your dream, believe
Don’t let the jealous dissuade or deceive
Keeping you where they are is their mission
Let 'em ride, and just believe
Just believe, believe, believeAttachment: believescanned.pdf (Downloaded 0 times)

Great lines here Joel! Got a melody?
"Be a laser" seems a little out of place...

Beautiful, inspirational song. I understand the song to say that people should believe and never ever let anyone convince them differently. Be obstinate in the face of what appears to be contradictory evidence told by those jealous of the certainty a believer embodies, as they often have to adjust their beliefs according to the success or failure of their current understanding. so driven mad and sinking in their relativistic worldview they make it their focused mission to knock you down to their level. Don't they know satan's tactics? Cheers

Yeah always seems its easier for OTHERs to believe if YOU BELIEVE WITH THEM- why they always try to deter you- but in the end we are all unique-just like everyone else
