Hello forum member. This year we will hold 2 separate contests. One for lyricists and one for songwriters. The theme of each entry should be holiday/seasonal related.
This contest is for the purpose of fun and competition. We will announce a winner and a runner up at the conclusion of the contest. There will be no prizes.

You may submit one entry as a solo artisit and one as a collboration.

Entries will be accepted from December 1 - December 10, 2020.

Judging will take place after the 10th.

Start preparing now. Stay tuned for more details in the next few days :)

Andrea, this is a great idea. I'll get my Santa hat on and see what I can come up with! Let's hope a few more can chime in and make this fun.

I can't wait to hear what you come up with Chris. I am wondering if members are seeing this notice. Do you think I should post something in the disucssion section?

Thanks,
Andrea

Andrea,
Could this also include a well know Christmas song that was done in a style of something else or does it have to be an original piece?

Owen and I need to finalize the rules (i hope we can do this by tomorrow), but I am thinking it should be original. I will check with Owen and let you know for sure. Thanks, Andrea

That's a great question.
Since the contest is for lyrics and "songwriting", how is "songwriting" defined?
If a new accompaniment/arrangement of existing lyrics is original, is that not songwriting?
Let the voters be the judge. (still needs to be original)

The Holidays have traditional roots. Therefore it makes sense to consider songs that pay homage to those roots. IMHO

Sketch

PS --- Gives new meaning to the term chord "progression". - lol

Moptop and Sketch,

Lyrics and music must be new and not something you have previously posted in the forum.

The rules have been posted. You can go here to read them:

http://www.thesongwritersforum.com/forum/view_topic.php?id=16706&forum_id=101

I have also posted a topic in the discussion section to determine interest in this competition as well as furture competitions. Thanks

Heya,
Ok just a thought of mine....it’s said, that the Voting is anonymous....that’s great, but are the entries also posted on here anonymously? I mean we should let the music and/or the lyrics speak for themselves hu? Not that I think some would only like song xy because he is made by a friend or something.... I’d just like to let the work stand on it’s own. Owen and Andrea should of cause know who wrote which song, but to me it seems more interesting if they are posted anonymously.
BTW owen thanx for you quick fix on the website!

I had the same thoughts, but it was quickly pointed out to me that everyone will know the artist when they hear the song. Due to this fact, the voting will be anonymous, but not the posts. It will be expected that people will vote based on merit only. It has worked in the past, so hope to find the same this year.

Thanks to Owen for getting the site back up and running!

Only 3 Christmas songs so far? Hopefully there will be a mountain of entries before the closing date. I've got my Santa hat on already!!:Guitarman1:

Hi Chris, I keep checking new entries as the the 10th gets closer.

There are so many talented people here in the forum, I hope to see more soon. It doesn't matter if you have been here for 10 years or a day, I hope you will take part in this friendly competition.

It doesn't have to be Christmas per se - just holiday/seasonal themed.

If you have questions about the contest, feel free to post it in this thread or send me a PM.

Enjoy :)

I'm going to the recording studio tomorrow to record vocals. I should have a whole song to post before the deadline.

Also, I plan to vote for someone besides myself. This will force me to evaluate the other entries and choose a winner to vote for.

- Sketch

PS --- I suppose I will have regrets if I lose the contest by one vote. - lol

I was thinking about you today. I am so happy you have a song for the contest.

As for voting, Owen and I will post guidelines. I feel the same as you do about voting for oneself. When the time comes, use the guidelines.

Is it too soon to say Happy Holidays?

Happy Holidays :)

Steve,
Glad to hear you're still planning to throw you hat in the ring for this. I planned on doing the same thing you said and not vote for myself.....although it would be a bummer to lose by that ONE vote!...story of my life!:rollface

Thanks. I look forward to reading and hearing all the submissions.
And curious to hear what you have up your sleeve.

I hope there is an opportunity at some point to discuss the work.
I know I am pushing the boundaries, as usual. Good to hear all the stories.

- Sketch

PS --- I bought a couple of PRS guitars that sound absolutely stunning recorded.
I hope to record vocals for two songs today. Both to be released shortly.
