I've spent many years on sites like this one, in fact it was my motivation to buy my first computer (Windows ME and AOL Dialup lol). 20yrs ago the first thing I noticed is how absolutely serious everyone was about breaking into the music bizz. Sites like these used to be inundated with rip-off studios promising to promote your music for only $500 lol, or self proclaimed pros offering to take you under their wing and teach you how to be a "real" writer/performer. Coming from a musical family I've always understood, whenever you have 3 or more musicians trying to pull a song in 3 different directions, that's what ultimately makes creating music dynamic and unique. The online experience is much different though, it's much harder not to step on people's creative toes... much harder not to sound like you're just blowing your own horn and criticizing. I've often wondered why everyone says "Feedback / Crits welcome" but, with so many options available on the World Wide Web, hardly anyone is collaborating. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not entirely against "the bizz". If I saw an opportunity to make a buck I would jump just like anyone else. However, despite the bizz, I still wonder why sites like this seem to be more competitive than collaborative. You see, I already know that putting 3 chords together and singing about my eX-girlfriend doesn't make me an original lol. It's the main reason I generally keep what I do sparse and simple... It's easy to be a critic...

I am not sure I feel the competativeness in our forum, but more collaboration would be awesome.

I am in (no son involved) if you want to collab. We both like rock, so I think we could pull it off. We both write the lyrics, and you write the music. I don't think you would be happy if the music was just some little riffs - lol.

BTW, I am always up for a collab :)

I think what most people are looking for is an audience. Someone to hear their songs. It's hard to keep writing if no one is listening. Critical feedback is useful, but I don't think that's what draws most people. The audience here is small, but being songwriters we perhaps understand better than others and notice things others wouldn't.
It would be great to be successful and make money but for most of us that isn't likely. But at least on sites like this one we can be heard.

I think our recent collaboration showed what it's all about. As far as my take, it went pretty smooth.

If another member asked me to collaborate, and I felt the storyline was appealing, I would be open to it.

interesting thoughts...
This site is no longer inundated of promotional messages because now they have migrated on Facebook....lol
I don't feel the competition here.
It is exciting to talk with people from all over the world about our passion. I find rewarding both to receive and to leave feedback. In the lyric section I see more collaborations...it is remarkable that is always free. I co-wrote a song and one of the group did very little, much less that some advices I see here, and had her name on the song. Gratuity is the added value of this forum.
But gratuity encourages collaboration only to a certain extent, because is a lot of work to help to a whole song...and anyone has his own projects. Another thing that doesn't encourage collaboration is the fact that most of the people write here are perfectly unknown...to other members. No name, or photo or links to a personal profile...It is hard to give trust to people without any credit. If I choose to collaborate I do prefer to do it with musicians I know, name, face, and address, and musical capabilities...I think this website is doing his job very well, sometimes a collaboration and a friendship can happen and the sense of community between the members is real and helpful...if we could go out to have a beer all together this would help a lot, you would see how many new songs... :)

Nothingless, I feel where you are coming from. I too love meeting and sharing with people from around the world. There is security in anonymity, and it takes time to get to know other members.

Trust doesn't come easy, but it can be earned (by you or by others). If you find someone you want to work with - let them know. Someone needs to take the first step.

There is a collaboration section here too for you to look at, or post in. There are probably other member who would love to connect, but someone needs to be first.

Wish we could all go have a drink this weekend :)

Thank you I didn't notice the collaboration section.
Sure, someone has to do the first step and I understand perfectly the privacy concerns.
Maybe we will organize one day a songwriting seminar with the bar-n-grill too :)
songwriters associations do this already and wouldn't be strange that a forum promote such an event

Co-writing is hard especially if an idea is very personal. That is my biggest issue with it. I have co-written successfully on here but my other attempt did not fair well. You must find someone who is on the same page. Writing styles must match. I write traditional country almost exclusively and the other co-writer wrote more pop country. Or verses did not mesh and the whole vibe/idea did not go in the direction I was looking for. I think collaboration is a great idea when you can find someone on the same page. It can move ordinary to extraordinary with a second writer. Finding that common bond is the issue.

That's actually a good point MPD! Even when you're sitting in a circle with other musicians, If you're the only one that likes the song... the rest aren't going to care lol :)
