Come Work On The Line

I lost my job as an engineer
And I was past my prime
Every door I knocked
Wouldn't give me the time

I finally got an interview
And down to my last dime
He said he had a job for me
If I'd work on the line

This was the only offer I had
And I felt like crying
But.................

(Chorus)

I traded my white collar
For one that gets dirty
And I get a fresh uniform
Six days a week

Now my old friends at the country club
They don't speak to me
But my new friends on the line
Are stand up guys indeed

I glad my old friends are gone
Along with their high society

(Chorus)

bridge:
I have heath insurance
A dental plan too
A 401K
For all the work we do

(chorus)

It's mandatory overtime
Ten hours a day
Half hour for lunch
Less if your late

We report to a team leader
Who runs the crew
Everyone works together
So the line runs smooth

You can tell when it is
Because everyone's in their groove

----------Chorus------------------------
He said
Come work on the line------man
You get a 10 minute break for every two
Come work on the line ---------man
You quota depends on the job you do
If your not use to working
This jobs not for you
Come work on the line man
Come work on the line

Got a good feel to it John. Should work in your style.

When you set it to music, take a look for places where you can shorten or take words out like:
Only a week maybe two or three > Only a week maybe three
Keeping the line running smooth > Keep the line running smooth

but you need to hear those things before deciding which is smoother.

Me likes!

Strange, I'm not getting email notifications.

Thanks for your feedback, I'll work on them before I record in the morning.

I didn't like having three verses. But, with two verses this came out to be only 2:38 min, too short for. Me.

So I was shooting for just around 3:00 with two verses. I deleted the third verse and added short pre-choruses music. Then as in Jason Alden's "Hick Town" I used a variation of the chorus after the third pass.

Come Work On The Line

I lost my cushy job
As a senior engineer
I knocked on a lot of doors
Trying to save my career

A door finally opened
But to my surprise
I was offered a factory job
Working on the line

(Chorus)

I traded my white collar
For one that gets dirty
I get a fresh uniform
Six days a week

My old friends at the country club
Now they don't speak to me
But my new friends on the line
Are more than I need

(Chorus)

bridge:
We all have heath insurance
A dental plan too
A 401K
For all the work we do

----------Chorus------------------------
He said
Come work on the line------man
You get a 10 minute break for every two
Come work on the line ---------man
You quota depends on the job you do
If your not use to working
This jobs not for you
Come work on the line man
Come work on the line

(Third pass)
Three ten minute breaks
Half hour lunce too
Your quota depends
On the job you do
If your not use to working
This jobs not for you
Come work on the line man
Come work on the like

I like it I like it a lot

I just took a $25k cut back to Engineer in Training. Made it work cause new plant was 5 miles from home. Dirtier job but I do in too. Amazed my wife when the electricians invited me to retirement dinners

Thank you. I'm recording here in a bit. It's basically a true story. It happened to me when I lived in Tennessee.

Kudos on reworking it John. I think a willingness to spend some time and effort editing is one of the things that can really add polish to a song. Looking forward to hearing it!

I was working in Tennessee. TVA nuclear smacked a lot of us in the face

Johnny Cash and his 52 53 ......67 automobiles comes to mind.

I reread my post. “Just took” meant “only took”. Happened quite a few years ago

John, I really like this. I love that this guy has to take a job well below his abilities, but he finds something positive beyond everything hard. Cool write.

Thanks Andrea,

I changed the opening making it a little more clear. It's in the database section.

It ain't the lap of luxury
But the lights are still on
My new clothes in the laundry
Keep rhythm with this song... :)

Cool write John. Are they still hiring? I’m so burned out at my job right now I think I’d leave if I could find even comparable pay. This is good because many can relate.
