I started this a year ago, my cowriter and I agree this is the strangest song either of us have been involved with.  We have rewritten it a dozen times and have three different singers demos. (all very good female vocals)  We can't get a handle on what it is exactly that is not working with it, this song will not leave us alone, we'd give up on it but it keeps haunting us both.  Help!

V1

On this day I give my love

and understanding to see us through

the new year approaching

my season's wish for you

(chorus)

So splendid, this gift of Christmas

the day He gave us His Son

to show us the way

to live our lives each day

So splendid, this gift to us

V2

In all we encounter

we'll share these blessings every day

and thank God with each prayer

content in living life this way

(repeat chorus)

V3

Glorious is the gift

of peace in knowing

to keep your family close

and the light of Christmas glowing

(Inst)

V4

So take these blessings

in every smile and each embrace

and pay them forward

to make the world a brighter place

(repeat chorus)

This is a quick mix using this singer, not a finished demo, Thanks!

Brenda, I run into these things all the time and have a folder full of them.

My personal opinion is the music doesn't quite fit the lyrics or vice versa.  The two seem to be sort of forced to fit.  I also wanted to get the feeling of Christmas when listening and....even though I tried real hard, just didn't feel it.  Of course it isn't Christmas yet which could explain it.  But play "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer" and I can get that one real quick.

Did the other demos use the same music and lyrics or did you change it?  I would be curious to hear the other ones too!

The lady sings very nice on this one.

Thanks, Mike.  Our thoughts from the beginning were that it does not sound like a Christmas song!  I have done quite a few different songs with Arnie, and it usually seems to me that the music is fast, I don't know.  I once told him maybe to add some bells or something...LOL  I will send you the other mp3's, if I kept them.  This one is Heather Cowels (I believe that's her last name).  We tried changing the melody, but it just won't go away!  Thank you so much for all the help you give me.

Brenda maybe if you just added some subtle bells to the music it might make a difference.

See I think the song is good but it sounds a little odd because the verses sound a little haunting but the I think the bells would off set it and balance it. Just don't over do the bells. I think the melody is great.

I think the line "So splendid, this gift of Christmas" is great and would use it twice in the chorus. I would replace the line "So splendid, this gift to us" with "So splendid, this gift of Christmas" IMHO

Don't worry about the giving up, he doesn't give up on anything!:D

Just wait until you hear the one he started and asked me to help with, its a different kind of lullaby...LOL  You can just imagine for now.

Brenda, HO,HO,HO!!!  :D let's get into the Christmas Spirit. :D  The timing is not right, and it is beng done to a melody in a minor key, or at least fewer minor chords.  Find a melody "cheerful" in a Major key. Reset the timing to your lyrical message. Find a happy Tempo to match the lyric, even if you have to re-work the lyric.  Your hold-notes possibly in different places for different emphasis.  Things are just unmatched.

IMHO :D  I think this will give positive results. :D  HO,HO,HO!!!

I think the melody is beautiful, but maybe too complex for most listeners. I wouldn't change it completely, the motif is gorgeous. Melody needs to feel settled somewhere. But it IS a wonderful melody, so I hope you don't change it much, maybe just a little simplification. Lady has a beautiful voice! Great lyrics! I love the message. I don't think minor chords ruin the good feeling though. Lots of Christmas songs are in minor keys, Fum Fum Fum, Carol of the Bells, Hi Ho Anybody Home, Pat-a-pan, etc...

Thank you, Bob!  Arnie does make his music complex and I tell him all the time it sounds complicated...LOL  He says he likes to start out that way and then thin it out. He did add some light bells to it and lighten it a bit.  He is still working on it, I think..LOL  He got me to help with another now.  I will pass on your comments to him, thank you!  The melody will have to stay, it just is stuck in our heads.  Don't know what else we could really do with it to make it more Christmas like, but you gave some great examples of songs. :D

Hey, sorry Rick, I missed that post!!!  So, my reply is over a month late!!  Thank you, yes we thought the melody was so strange.  This song really bugged us for the longest time.  We liked it, then we didn't, but it wouldn't get out of our heads.  Now, we are stuck with it. :?
