This is about my Mamma: Emma Wilkey. We would gather on Sundays and she would take her grandchildren out on her front porch that ran along the highway. One of our favorite games was Count the Cars. Each of us chose a color and whoever counted the most of their color won. She also loved riddles and passed that love on to me and most of my cousins. We pronounced Mamma as Mammaw.

Play Mamma Play Copyright 2006 (Mac Wilkey)

Chorus:
“Play, Mamma, play,” we’d say, “play, Mamma play.
Words she never tired of hearing her grandchildren say
Maybe childish laughter soothed away some hurtful scars
So she would tell us riddles; tell us “Count the passing cars.”

I just wonder if our laughter chased away her tears
As she sat and rocked out on that porch for all those years
We didn’t know that road had one day stolen Mamma’s child
She must have pictured him with us as we were running wild

Repeat Chorus

She taught us how to joke and laugh and loved to play each game
Though life had taught rough lessons, she refused to place the blame
On someone else or blame the God she honored up above
We all were truly blessed by feeling our grandmother’s love

Repeat Chorus

She’s moved on up to heaven and there’s still no cause to frown
She’s sitting out on God’s front porch beside the boy she found
And I’m thinking Jesus chuckles when He hears her say once more
“Now, Son, what did the carpet say to Chrissie’s filthy floor.”

Repeat Chorus

Mas, you might want to put copyright or © with your name and date at the end to help protect your work. I like the overall lyric, Don’t really see any need for changes.

I keep forgetting to do that. Most of these are included in a book that has a copyright 2006 but I am tweaking them a little.

Thanks Mike.

Very nice. Reads real smooth. Lovely to remember her in this way.
