Just finished a new one. Here's a rough demo - https://youtu.be/QSPceT3vG_w Let me know what you think. Probably the most enigmatic, swampy, mournful thing I've done. For the future, I hear accompaniment with a standup bass, lapsteel or slide or fiddle, and Tennessee Three ticky tack drum beat. FYI and off topic, for the guitar geeks out there -- I used a Martin D-18 outfitted with a soundhole DeArmond pickup (like the one Lightnin Hopkins used), run into an old Fender Deluxe Reverb.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Trestle Walker Blues
©2020, Charles McCullough
Lightning on the ridge line
Ravens in a hearse,
Walk the tracks from Main Street
Down to the old traverse
Lantern on the trestle
Handcuffs on the rail,
Black mud river rising
Blues rain down like nails
Blues rain down like nails
CHORUS
Alibis and sacred lies
Idolize the shrines of used to be,
Close your eyes and cross the ties
Realize you don’t need light to see
Hellhound at the crossroads
Vapor in the pines,
Knife point in the willow
Bullets in the signs
Flat black Ford at midnight
Tire prints in the mud,
Viper in the cypress
Creek bank stained with blood
Creek bank stained with blood
CHORUS
Reservoir at daybreak
Flashlights cut the rain,
Bloodhounds in the canebrake
Sing a sad refrain
Walk the tracks to Main Street
Courthouse clock has stopped,
Ravens tend the graveyard
All the doors are locked
All the doors are locked
CHORUS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Recorded on July 26, 2020 at Above The Garage Studios, Clifton, VA
Personnel: Charles McCullough, everything

Oh I like this so much! What a vibe! Gritty and dirty blues. Love the vocals!

I'd quote my favorite lines, but I'd have to repeat the whole song! Love the way you tell the story with just fragments in phrases.

The internal rhymes in the chorus is another highlight for me.

Brilliant!

Thanks so much. This song started with the open tuning, fingerpicked guitar vamp. Then the imagery in the verses came to me very quickly. The chorus took a long time to come to me. It was as if the song revealed itself to me when it was good and ready.
