"Doing Things I Shouldn't Do" is intended to be a burst of energy. A foot stomping, air-drumming, first track on the album - if people still listened to albums - type of song!

I'd really appreciate any feedback particularly on the mix and production, but also anything else that you spot.

A quick call
Just to check the coast is clear
My hands shake
Adrenaline, pumped up on fear

A short walk
A red door a gentle knock
A slight pause
Now there’s no way out of here

In a place I shouldn’t be
Doing things I shouldn’t do
The feeling washing over me
Doing things I shouldn’t do

In a place I shouldn’t be
Doing things I shouldn’t do
The secrets stays with you me
Doing things I shouldn’t do

When it’s done
And there’s no going back
It’s too late
To change what’s been and gone

I can’t tell
No one else must ever know
I’m in deep
Now there’s no way out of here

In a place I shouldn’t be
Doing things I shouldn’t do
The feeling washing over me
Doing things I shouldn’t do

In a place I shouldn’t be
Doing things I shouldn’t do
The secrets stays with you me
Doing things I shouldn’t do

Hi Martin, I like the mysterious creepy feeling of the lyrics. I could imagine this with heart pounding rock music, but the music doesn't feel that way to me. I like the drums a lot, but I was expecting some guitars to add energy. The piano is nice and adds to the secret feeling, but it doesn't feel high energy to me. I could see the intro with the piano and then adding guitars. Maybe even some combination in-between the verses. Totally just my opinion. Overall, I like it :)

Thanks very much for the feedback Andrea. I did originally have guitar riff in there but took it out because it just didn't sound right.

But following your feedback I've recorded another guitar part that I will try.

I like this song. Got an 80s vibe to it for mine (hope that doesn't offend!!).

I'd add a little reverb to the vocal. The drums in particular have it, and the difference between them makes it feel like they were recorded in different spaces.

You might also experiment with panning on the backing vocals again to give a sense of space to the recording.

The different instruments are coming through cleanly so I like your mix there.

You might experiment with adding a short quiet section - go for contrast with the high energy main groove and vary the dynamics a little.

Good track!

I really like this song. I agree with RDM, it has an 80's vibe, and that's good. I like the dry vocal sound, but that's just my preference - no right or wrong about it. The instrumentation is fine. The drums are really well worked out but, to me, sound a bit mechanical in places - maybe that doesn't matter in this genre. I think the intro only needs to go around once, but otherwise I really enjoyed this. Excellent.:)

I like this a lot. I have to agree with RDM and Chris, it does have an 80's feel to it, nicely done! You've got a clear and clean mix just like I like them. Love the phaser on the guitar and the instrument placement in the stereo field. I would add just a touch of reverb to the vocals to give a bit of depth to help blend them more with the music but other than that I think you got a good one here.

Well done, thanks for sharing....

..Oh and thanks for putting "Carefree Day" on your SoundCloud like list. I was very surprised when it came on right after listening to your song!

I think the guitar part with the phaser should run throughout the song! :)

First, a huge thankyou to everyone for your feedback, I really appreciate it - good or bad. It's interesting that you have all said it has an 80's feel. This wasn't intentional but happy with that.

I've listened to the feedback, and have come up with this:

I'd love to know what you think of this version.

I like your new version. The extra guitar gives it depth.
I like the sparser treatment at "When it's done" too; gives it a nice contrast.
I think you've been well repaid for your efforts to refine it.

Cool track and lots of interesting dynamics.

I particularly like the guitar that comes in from a minute in. It's a slightly mixed blessing because it's got such a rich sound to it that it makes the rest sound a bit flat, but it's a demo so no big deal. Could be worth playing with some vocal effects to give it more resonance?

Wow ! The second version simply rocks, what a difference . . . so great to see a song developed like this on the TSF forum. I particularly like the analog warmth of the electric guitar, and the vocals / harmony vox are clear and well done throughout. Near the end I got a sense it was recorded live ? . . . but maybe not, either way, very well done, and thanks for sharing here.

Thanks very much for all the great feedback. Interesting popitup that you think it sounds like it was recorded live. It wasn't, but I think it's great that you think it sounds live.

I was pleased with the original (v4) version I posted, but thanks to the feedback developed it some more and was really pleased with the second (V8) version. I thought at that point I had taken it as far as I could but I was keen to hear what difference it would make if it was professionally mastered. So I have paid to have this done. For anyone interested, the V8 version was with me mastering it in Ableton.

Here is the final professionally mastered version.

I so like the "final" version of this . . . has an analog warmth to it, all sorts of interesting bits and pieces panned left and right just popping in for a sonic visits.
This is all very well done, it's got heaps of character, so excellent.

This made me feel dirty in a good way.

I think you've had more than enough critique regarding the sound of the track, which is clearly -- like my stuff -- a bedroom recording, not a polished studio effort, so I'll treat it as such and just say that it's decently listenable, and as a composition, it's very workmanlike and more than adequate.

I have been away on vacation, so missed a couple takes, but love all the developments. I think it has a stronger sound and retains that mysterious feel to it. Nice job :)
