This is actually my most recent recording (Not counting a cover song I recorded earlier this year, but I figure cover songs are a no here). I recorded this September last year, but the song was actually written back in 1988. Over the last year or so I've been trying to work my way back to my roots and focusing more on the piano again. About my first 5 years writing music all of it was written on my mother's piano. Of course, I don't own a piano, but I'm happy with the piano sounds on my keyboard. I have a Zoom R8 to record onto now. This song has 6 tracks vocal, keyboard piano, keyboard organ, bass, guitar and I programmed the simple drums on the Zoom R8. I try to do everything on the Zoom R8 now and not over complicate things. I'll usually do the final editing using audacity on my PC, usually that is just clipping silence at the beginning and end and any final mastering effects. I hope you enjoy it.

And He'll Play His Rock And Roll (All Night Long)

I saw him in the spring standing on a stage
Playing in a band from Texas to Maine
Touring half the country pouring out his soul
When He plays guitar, ooh, he plays so cool

He'll play in the rain in the winter snow
Through a hurricane down in Orlando
And when you hear him rocking he will sooth your soul
When he plays guitar, ooh, he plays so cool

And he'll play his rock and roll for as long as he can
Yes, he'll play his rock and roll playing lead for the band
And when you here him playing as he's pouring out his songs
Is that rock and roll music he's been playing for so long

And he'll play his rock and roll all night long
Yes, he'll play his rock and roll all night long

I saw him once again standing on a stage
Playing in a band from Texas to Maine
Touring half the country pouring out his soul
When he plays guitar, ooh, he plays so cool
Yes, touring half the country pouring out his soul
When he plays guitar, ooh, he plays so cool

And he'll play his rock and roll all night long
Yes, he'll play his rock and roll all night long...

Well... I'll say I think you're pretty tame for a RUSH fan :)

Yeah, I love Rush, but it rarely shows in my music. In fact, I didn't even start listening to Rush until the early 90s so I really didn't know much about them when I wrote this one. Early on my 2 biggest influences were The Beatles and Elton John.

I went ahead and updated my favorites list, but my influences aren't just restricted to those bands.

Cool tune man. I like the piano parts. You’re a good player.
I really like the lyrics though. I’ve always liked songs that tell a story.
Great job. Looking forward to hearing more from you.

I think you need to inject some energy into this one.

I like the lyric, there's a strong story there but the music drags a bit for me. It's a song about rock n roll so beef it up!

The drum pattern could be more complex and varied and the keys too.

I think you've got the right idea for the intro with the instruments gradually coming in, though I'd like them to come in sooner - the basic piano sound becomes repetitive quickly by itself.

I think the song itself has good potential. For me it just falls flat of what it could be.

I've always felt like it needed a little more oomph. When I first started writing I was on my mothers piano and that was it. It probably should be a lot more guitar and bass driven, but I've really gotten back into the simplicity side of things.

I do agree that I should have done a little more with the drums too, I'm trying to figure out a way to program more complicated drums on the R8. Unfortunately, each drum pattern you use takes up one track on the Zoom R8 so a real complicated drum song can easily take up all 8 tracks and I really hate using outside sources for the drums.

Personally, I think a lot of music is repetitive and relies on the lyrics to keep it going.

Do you have software on your computer for recording? A digital audio workbench (DAW) can be used to create a drum track with no practical limits on how many tracks/drums you want to use. You can get a DAW for free, but it does take time to learn how to use one!

I've tried, computer recording just does not do it for me. Most of it gets too complicated for it's own good. I don't mind doing the final mix with Audacity, but I don't like recording directly into a computer. There was one program I did like for a while called Kristal Audio Engine, I used that along with Hydrogen Drum Machine on a couple recordings. Unfortunately, it does not work on newer operating systems. I've never found another program quite like it either.

This is so Bowie with a touch of Petty, I love it! You mix is clear and clear just like I like'em so whatever your doing, you're doing it right. The only one thing I would suggest is raising the level of the vocal just a touch.

Well done, thanks for sharing.

Wow, David Bowie. I certainly like hearing that. I think one of the hardest part for someone who does everything by themself is mixing the vocals. You might think you have it loud enough and clear because you hear and understand the lyrics, but you already know the lyrics so it's really easy for you to understand them. Someone who has never heard the song before and doesn't know the lyrics may not be able to hear and understand it as well.

I can hear Petty (one of my favorites)! I like the lyrics and the musical tune. I do agree with RDM that the music could pick up a bit. More energy would fit the story.
