2020 7 Let all things now living
by James Conrad © 2020

https://soundcloud.com/jamestoffee/2020-7-let-all-things-now-living-version-2

=====Version 2=====

Lock eyes, hold hands and dance
Fill the halls with your laughter
The raindrops splash on jubilant feet
The time for rest comes after

Chorus
Let all things now living
Give thanks to God
Let all things now living
All things now living
Give thanks to God

Each day’s a new song to sing
Each night’s an old song to ponder
Angels retune the broken strings
And carry the fallen yonder

Chorus
Let all things now living
Give thanks to God
Let all things now living
All things now living
Give thanks to God

Bridge
Grass withers, flowers fade
Stars will fall from the sky
Only His Word will remain
He is the source of life

Chorus
Let all things now living
Give thanks to God
Let all things now living
All things now living
All things now living
All things now living
Give thanks to God

=====Original Version=====

https://soundcloud.com/jamestoffee/2020-7-let-all-things-now-living

Breathe in the breath of life
Turn your thoughts to His praises
The raindrops dance on jubilant feet
While moments pass away

Chorus
Let all things now living
Give thanks to God
Let all things now living
All things now living
Give thanks to God

Each day’s a new song to sing
Each night’s an old song to ponder
Angels retune the broken strings
And carry the fallen yonder

Chorus
Let all things now living
Give thanks to God
Let all things now living
All things now living
Give thanks to God

Bridge
Grass withers, flowers fade
Stars will fall from the sky
Only His Word will remain
He is the source of life

Chorus
Let all things now living
Give thanks to God
Let all things now living
All things now living
All things now living
All things now living
Give thanks to God

Hey James,

Good job on this. Tell us more about this.
Is this intended to be a listening song or a worship sing-along?

Did you do all the instruments?
Were those actual violins or a keyboard?

Is this a home recording, or did you get studio help?

Sketch

I think it could be a worship sing-along, but actually I think of a song like this more for meditative reflection. I've found that when I listen back to my past songs, when I make up characters and stories, I already know/remember I made them up, so they have less meaning for me.

However, when I write these types of songs, let's call them choruses/praise songs, they remind me to reflect on God and Biblical truths, so I personally enjoy them more, and will often play them during a workout routine, or quiet reflection time.

It's a home recording using Band in the Box 2020 [It's awesome!....so quick to use and professional sounding IMHO]for the instruments and Sonar Platinum as my DAW for mixing in the voice(s). I also use Harmony Engine EVO for the harmony vocals https://www.antarestech.com/product/harmony-engine-evo/

Sometimes I like the generated harmony sound b/c it gives a wider range and it's also quicker and gives the basic idea. If and when I take any songs to the next level (ie studio recording) I would want to go with singers instead of machine.

Thanks for the listen and feedback :D

James

The chorus is a strength here, both musically and lyrically. That's really solid.

I also like the bridge, but the verses leave me a bit non-plussed. To me, they lack focus and integration with the chorus. Given the core message here is "give thanks to God", perhaps the verses could elucidate things we should give thanks for? I think you do that more in the 2nd verse, but even there it could be strengthened with a "thanks for the ..." or something like that.

I like your ending and the repeat on "All things now living" - melodically that works really well.

Thanks for the feedback, Owen.

In the verses, I was trying to focus on the idea that life, in this world, is on a timer, and although we feel like we may live forever; especially when younger, life passes pretty quickly (ie moments passing away (V1) and fallen carried yonder (V2) people dying on Earth.)...Then the chorus is a call out to all creatures currently alive on Earth to sing praises to God (while they still can on Earth).

I get that from the Bridge. I think it's really succinct there:
Grass withers, flowers fade
Stars will fall from the sky
Only His Word will remain

It wasn't as crisp for me in the verses -but as always trust your instincts! Only you know the song you are trying to write.

Good point. I'll think on it a bit. At this point, I can't think of a better way to rework the verses, but I'll see what some time away from it brings in the form of clarity.

Thanks again, Owen :D

Nice! I like those new opening lines!

I think it's the happier tone I'm picking up on. Not quite sure, but I definitely think you've improved it.
And a quick turnaround to boot!

Well done! :)

Good job on the rewrite. I like it too.

I'm back in the saddle with recording demos as well.
Working on a mix for a session I recorded a few weeks ago.
I plan to continue recording this weekend.
Should be posting things in the next few weeks.

"Let all things now living praise God!"

When I first read the lyrics I was expecting something a lot more bouncy and upbeat, so I couldn't help but give it a spin lol... Try it at 100bpm with a RnR swing and watch what happens :)

Good writing James!
