Id rather have knowlege than wisdom, you get wisdom from experience, and thats almost always painful. The odometer clicked yesterday, and getting older means Im gonna resemble that old man sooner than later.

Just a short country song about an old man who, learned the hard way. This one could possibly be done as a recitation, with the choruses sung.

As usual, comment, corrections, and suggestions are always welcome and appreciated. Thanks for reading.

The Apple

Verse 1
The old man rummaged my lunch bag
As he joined me on the bench
Retrieved an apple that he polished to a shine
"Looks like you could use a friend", he said
"I suppose I can fill in "
Held the apple up and said, "Hope you didn't mind"

Verse 2
"If it's a broken heart, I got answers
I've had more than I can count"
Took a bite of that apple, smiled, then shook his head
He said "If heartache could cause fevers
And loneliness cause chills
After fifty years like this, I'd long been dead"

Instrumental half verse...
...he said..

Chorus
Your heart knows when you're happy
Your eyes will see the truth
And your gut will tell you how to be a man
Your shoulder should be cried on
And your arms must hold her tight
But your head will make you crazy if it can

Verse 3
He said, "I don't know about you son
But The One I let get away
Oh, she loved me and she thought I hung the moon
But I was afraid I wasn't man enough
To keep her heart true blue
It was that fear that caused my wreck and ruin"

Verse 4
As he finished off the apple,
And tossed the core into the trash
He winked and said "I think you'll be just fine
You only need to find the courage
To know you're what she wants
Or else live a life of loneliness like mine"

Chorus
Your heart knows when you're happy
Your eyes will see the truth
And your gut will tell you how to be a man
Your shoulder should be cried on
And your arms must hold her tight
But your head will make you crazy if it can

Coda
Every time Im feeling insecure
Or I start to hurt a bunch
I make sure that theres an apple in my lunch

Okay Bunny, you got a good one again! A couple suggestions:
1. V2, line 1: It’s a broken heart, I can help (‘if’ is understood)
2. V4, line 5: To know you’re what she wants
Other minor changes should resolve themselves in the composition.

Charles

Thanks Charles, I really like know for understand. Left the If in verse 2... strange reason, as a singer it helps to soften the harshness of all the hard I's that follow. At least on the sing through...As usual though, very often, the lyrics I post and save modify during the sing anyway...lol so there a 50-50 chance itll be sung with or without the if...probably depends on how I feel at the time.

Thanks so much,

Bunny
