I am new to the forum. I have been looking around the forum and listening to some music and I must say I am impressed with the activity here. I like this place!

I am primarily a lyricist but I do play a very limited guitar and keyboard to help me get the songs across. But I also use tools like Band-in-a-Box and EZKeys as building blocks. I think I've heard some songs on this forum that use Band-in-a-Box backing tracks.

Do group members frown on things like Band-in-a-Box, etc.? This forum seems geared to the songwriter more so than the home recorder or virtuoso.

I use Band In A Box occasionally. I like it for creating solos in MIDI that I can then export into my DAW and edit afterwards. I usually don't do the whole thing in BIAB.

I play guitar and that is usually the core instrument for my tracks. I record that in Reaper (DAW) and apply FX to it, my "go to" being Guitar Rig 5 VST which is a cab and amp simulator.

For drums, I use MT Powerdrums 2, most often starting with one of their canned MIDI Loops & Fills, then editing that to suit my needs.

I have a keyboard but my playing skills are rudimentary. I record that in MIDI and fix all the mistakes afterwards. I use various virtual instruments, but have been experimenting with Synth1 lately.

I record my own vocals out of necessity, but I am no singer! I have found the iZotope Vocal Doubler helpful there for creating a thicker sound and hiding some of the blemishes.

Thanks RainyDayMan.

Okay, so my use of BnB won't be too offensive it seems.

Anything that gets the job done Sean!
We want to hear how it sounds, and if BIAB works for you then go for it!

I use a DAW called Studio One by Presonus.
I record everything in my little home studio.

Thank you samiamiamsam. I just listened/watched your video The Lid on Youtube. Great work. I love the "tighten down the lid" part at the end of the chorus. Nice.

Thanks for listening to my new song.
It was recorded using Studio One DAW I mentioned.
I used my Taylor acoustic for all guitar parts.
Ibanez sr505 for bass parts.
MIDI for all keyboards.
And Studio One Impact drum machine, for all percussion parts.

I guess I am old school in that I use a guitar and a legal pad. :)

That's funny.
Your username is Tekboy. But maybe that doesn't mean "tech"?

Sketch

PS --- I use Studio One like Sam. He's my hero. - lol

I'm currently into Tape Echo simulation pedals.

Cool Edit Pro was my main DAW for 10+ years until I got and newer computer and started using Cubase....and I thought I was the only dinosaur in the music world!!

For drums I use MT Power Drumkit 2. It has some of the best patterns and fills I've come across so far and it can be D/L'ed for free without restrictions. After the first couple of times I used it I sent them a donation because it's so easy to use and it sounds great. You can even use it for just creating your drum track and then tell it to use any other programs for the sounds if you wish.

Sean, I have no problem with anyone using BIAB or other programs that help them to create their musical projects.

No one should miss out on bringing their ideas to fruition just because they are not a professional musician. If this technology allows them to explore that creative outlet then by all means use it. That's what it was created for!

Sketch,
you made me chuckle a bit with this line. It wasn't too awful long ago that 15, 7 1/2, 3 3/4, and 1 7/8's were the standards and all we had at that time! And the crazy thing about is ....we made them work and they sounded GREAT!

I think you'll find that plugin quite useful. It made this NON-drummers job a lot easier!
