Looking for a site that can provide constructive critique of songs. I recently found a site like that for writer of fiction, so hoped to find something similar for SW. I would return the favor, best I can. Hopefully, it's more than just "Likes" and that I learn and can offer constructive advice also.

Welcome Belladonna, I believe that this site is exactly what you have described. We have loads of writers, who offer plenty of constructive criticism. I feel like I personally have grown as a songwriter by being a member here. I have learned so many tips and techniques that have me feeling my hobby is developing into a true craft. Hope you enjoy it here. Look forward to reading your work.

Welcome Belladonna,

>Looking for a site that can provide constructive critique of songs...it's more than just "Likes" and that I learn and can offer constructive advice also.

Here are some options:

Songtown.com or Taxi.com or Songu.com

....so all 3 sites I mentioned involve paying fees. If you are willing to do that, you may find what you are looking for.

Coursera has a great free songwriting course by Pat Pattison

https://www.coursera.org/learn/songwriting-lyrics

Another approach is to critique some of the songs on this forum to show your songwriting focus and see if others reciprocate.

You could also enter song contests to get feedback.

You could join BMI or ASCAP or some of the Nashville songwriting groups.

One challenge is in defining who your target audience is and then getting feedback from that group that may or may not be songwriters able to give constructive criticism.

-James

I've been writing about 8 Years and have already done all the above.

SongU had some live online small groups of persons they critiqued all the songs at once and you could listen to what they advised. It was helpful.

Songtown I felt was a little pricey for what you got and the site was not real friendly. I suppose it's hard on line to get a warm cozy feeling.

Taxi - I've heard good and bad things. Haven't tried it but what good is paying for reviews if there are no opportunities to get your songs anywhere.

Contests - Everyone pays to enter and then they take some of the money and pay out prizes and keep the rest and your songs basically have no where to go, except to say you've won a prize.

I do FAWM and 50/90. Okay, lots of real amateurs so the advice is not real constructive.

I'm a member of ASCAP and was on the BMI site for some years, ran into some not very nice people there and had to leave. Heartburn!!

I've taken Pat Pattison's class twice. Watching videos and peer reviews, so again amateur advice.

I'm enrolled in a college writing class now, professor is a little more helpful, but still a lot of peer reviews.

I guess it's really just keep on keeping on and learning as you go and you've just got to hang in there ten or fifteen years. Probably not going anywhere cause I'm past my prime.

Also, on the BIAB site a lot.

Sounds like the next step may be to try your hand at teaching songwriting locally, or write a book. There is learning and growth that take part in both processes.

....and based on your mentioning of lots of peer reviews as a common factor in your search, a big step could be to move to Nashville where the quality of your peers reviewing may be above average and what you are looking for.

....whatever you do, don't forget to have fun :D

Jamestoffee,
Great idea with the book and maybe starting a local group. I'm in one already in a nearby town.
