My younger brother was autistic and when I was a teen I worked with autistic kids at the school he attended. As a special ed. teacher, I taught autistic students which I thoroughly enjoyed.

The Noise That Annoys
_____________________Verse/Chorus
Verse 1:
Too much input, too many sounds and they’re all around
Where can I go, what can I do to get relief
I can deal with Mother Nature, not your towns
Give me a quiet spot far from rowdy streets
And let me process thoughts from the grace that abounds
Don’t be obnoxious, try to be discreet

Chorus:
Don’t they know, I know what they’re gonna say
I just want them to smile or go away
Don’t they see patterns all around them
Or the beauty that surrounds them
I’m done with their schemes and ploys
Don’t they know, it’s the noise that annoys

Verse 2:
Now music, soft and sweet, that’s a different thing
But tone it down so it won’t vibrate both my knees
I can feel the rhythms that the music brings
Give me some Beethoven, Chopin, Mozart please
So I can soothe my soul, let the breeze catch my wings
To lift my heart and put my mind at ease

Chorus:
Don’t they know, I know what they’re gonna say
I just want them to smile or go away
Don’t they see patterns all around them
Or the beauty that surrounds them
I’m done with their schemes and ploys
Don’t they know, it’s the noise that annoys

Bridge:
I can’t change how God made me when I came into this life
So please don’t try to mold or shape me or give me advice

Chorus:
Don’t they know, I know what they’re gonna say
I just want them to smile or go away
Don’t they see patterns all around them
Or the beauty that surrounds them
I’m done with their schemes and ploys
Don’t they know, it’s the noise that annoys

Post Chorus:
It’s the noise that annoys
Cut down the noise
That annoying noise

Very nice write Charles. Powerful bridge. I taught HS for many years on the other end of the spectrum... mostly TAG kids in Adv Math and Science, however many of them were very socially stunted, and as this was years before the Autism spectrum became so encompassing, I am very sure many of the kids I taught would have been classified. After leaving the classroom, I spent 5 years professionally parenting in grouphomes. I think those experiences have given me plenty of fodder for a lot of songs.

Strong message here, and your familiarity with autistic kids shines through. It feels sympathetic and respectful.

I like your bridge, but the word "unfurled" has more positive connotations than negative ones to me, so doesn't feel quite perfect for what you need.

You might try:
smile or go away > smile and go away

Hey RD Man, thanks for the kind review. I have found that most autistic people are highly intelligent and extremely perceptive. In the right situations, i.e., my classroom, they were able to respond those who try to mold or shape them in a positive manner, at least at the HS level. I’ve seen very few negative responses and that includes silence as a negative response. So ‘unfurled’ works. Now when I worked with young autistic kids, it was the reverse do to immaturity. To many people it is a shock when they, over time and truly making an effort to understand, realize what a treasure autistic people are.

Ok, I think I misunderstood your meaning with 'unfurled'.

I was initially reading it as 'dont try to mould me because that would unfurl me' in which case 'unfurled' should have a negative context

From your reply I'm getting 'don't try to mould me, because without that I can unfurl myself' in which case 'unfurl' has positive connotations and is perfectly suitable.

Yea RD Man, autistic people are extremely introverted, so they express themselves rarely. But when they do, it’s completely unexpected and quite educational for the intended target. People who try to mold or shape them don’t know who their dealing with.

Hey, RD Man... Despite my ramblings above, I decide to change the bridge. Check it out. I think the change better keeps in line with the attitude of the lyric.

That's a much clearer line. Good to come back to songs after a break. :)
