I've been watching a lot of AXS TV lately and they have a new show Mixtape where lots of musicians share their 6 to 10 songs that they would have on a mixtape of influential music. I've frequently thought about some of the songs that influence my writing. My challenge is, share your fantasy mix tape of 6 to 10 songs that influences your writing, regardless of genre. Id like it to include the song title, writer(s) and recording artist.
I'm going to start the ball rolling.
Bunny's Songwriter Mixtape
1. Love at the Five and Dime. - Nanci Griffith - Nanci Griffith
2. Pancho and Lefty. - Townes Van Sant - Willie Nelson & Merle Haggard
3. City of New Orleans - Steve Goodman - Arlo Guthrie, et al.
4. Hello in There - John Prine - John Prine; Bette Midler
5. I Scare Myself - Dan Hicks - Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks
6. Louise - Paul Seibel - Leo Kottke
7. Love Has No Pride - Eric Kaz , Libby Titus- Bonnie Raitt
8. Stormy Monday - T Bone Walker - The Allman Brothers Band
9. Try A Little Tenderness - J Campbell, R Connelly, HM Woods - Otis Redding; Jimmy Durante ( included my fave 2 versions)
10. Stardust - Hoagy Carmichael- Willie Nelson version
So theres where I get some of my inspiration. The challenge is on. Have fun , I look forward to seeing your lists. Happy Mixtape

Okay Bunny, The criteria I used was: (1) I had to know it by heart, (2) I had to have use it as an inspiration to my writing, and (3) I had to have researched it. As follows:
1. The Man I Love - Ira and George Gershwin, Ella Fitzgerald
2. How Much I Feel - David Pack, Ambrosia
3. Broken-hearted Me - Randy Goodrum, Anne Murray
4. Tales Of Brave Ulysses - Eric Clapton, Martin Sharp, Cream
5. Lyin’ Eyes - Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Eagles
6. Your Song - Elton John, Bernie Taupin
7. Blue Bayou - Roy Orbison, Linda Ronstadt
8. Farther Down The Line - Lyle Lovett
9. Suzanne - Leonard Cohen, Judy Collins
10. The City Of New Orleans -Steve Goodman, Arlo Guthrie
Note: not a comprehensive list.
Charles

In no particular order. Let me preface that almost any George Jones song has been influential but even he did some I can’t stand.
1. Bartenders Blues-George Jones
2. Chiseled in Stone-Vern Gosdin
3. From Here to the Door-Johnny Paycheck
4. Heaven Can’t Be Found- Hank Jr.
5. Whole Lot of Lonesome- David Allan Coe
6. The Note- Daryle Singletary
7. It’s Not Over if I’m not over you- Mark Chesnutt
8. Dr. Jesus-Ken Mellons
9. Everyone Has Someone They Can’t Forget-Conway Twitty
10. Heavy Dose of You-Mickey Lamantia

Thanks Bunny, fun topic. I hated to narrow it down so much because I feel I cheated a few artists, and songs, but you got the idea.

Interesting topic.
I have a different view of influences than most.
Spend a lot of time listening to music I could never hope to play.
Most impressed with artists that I could never emulate.
Or if I do, it is something subtle. Like guitar tone, or a rhythm.
Maybe others can hear these influences in my music.
I tend to listen to whole albums rather than individual songs.
These albums would be in my top picks.
Many of these I owned as vinyl before buying the CD.
- Sketch
01) On Every Street - Dire Straits
02) Aja - Steely Dan
03) The Green Album - Weezer
04) One By One - Foo Fighters
05) Ten Summoner's Tales - Sting
06) Layla - Derek and the Dominoes
07) Tres Hombres - ZZ Top
08) Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
09) Moondance - Van Morrison
10) Abbey Road - The Beatles

That's interesting, Sam.
That Black Sabbath album was very important. I was a teen when it came out.
I remember trying to sing the intro to Iron Man through a window fan. (for effect) - lol
Joni Mitchell - Court and Spark, also comes to mind. My introduction to Tom Scott and the
LA Express. (Larry Carlton and Joe Sample) Who were on the first Michael Franks album,
The Art of Tea. (a must-hear album) I'm a big Alice in Chains fan as well. And Nirvana, to
some extent. HUGE Dave Grohl fan. (mostly Foo Fighters)

I'm a big fan of Larry Carlton. He did all the best guitar solos for Steely Dan.
His solo on Kid Charlemagne is unbelievable.
I like the solo for Peg too. Can't remember who did that one but it was great.

Sketch and Sam, Albums are cool...Lots of those on my big flash drive that I keep in the car.. Other than Americana/Country my tastes ran more toward The Clash,The Tubes, The Ramones, Sex Pistols, in the 80s in the 70s it was the Allmans and of course Marshall Tucker (being from SC) as well as every blues album I could find. And of course Pet Sounds and Sgt. Pepper's and Thick as a Brick were a must have in my opinion.

I was a big fan of the Allman Bros and the Marshall Tucker Band, as well.
Especially Duane Allman with my slide guitar playing. Was also a HUGE fan of Johnny Winter.
The Second Winter album was my first exposure. Also loved Johnny Winter And - Live
And the little-known studio album - Johnny Winter And, which was really great but mostly ignored.
An early appearance of Rick Derringer, and some great songwriting on that album.

Jay Graydon is credited with the guitar solo on Peg - Steely Dan
It was typical for Steely Dan to hire several studio musicians to record solos for them.
They would pick the one they preferred and put it on the record.
Reelin' in the Years, soloist Elliott Randall, as the story goes, was shocked to
hear his solo on the radio. Not knowing that his solo had been chosen. - lol

I watched a documentary on YouTube recently about Steely Dan’s recording process.
It was very interesting how they did it. They are probably the best studio band of all time.
All of their records sound perfect.
Yeah, Jay Graydon. That’s the guy who did the solo on Peg. Thanks!
That’s funny how all those guys would come into the studio and lay down tracks, never knowing if they would make the cut until they heard the song on the radio months later. lol

Thanks for the heads-up, Bunny.
There is already a YouTube channel (AXS TV) with some trailers. Looks to be a good series.

Wow! What a great collection and you're right...very ecclectic. Interestingly, As a huge GFR fan from back in the day, yeah I'm old enough to remember when they weren't GFR, I recently was shocked to discover a copy of an old Animals vinyl from 1966 of Inside Looking Out. Never realized it had been a cover. Of course, I liked the GFR version better. Only a couple on your list I didnt immediately recognize ...guess I got some listening to do. Thanks for the list.
