Another co-write collaboration. Thanks Charles for coming on board to help get this one where it needs to be. Hope you all like it.

Keep The Change

Verse 1
“Clean your windows for a buck?” She asked
As he pulled into the lot
She didn’t pause for an answer
And she didn’t miss a spot
Her face bore lines of a well worn road
Green eyes faded gray with age
She’s a broken-hearted book
With a blow on every page

Verse 2
So he dug deep into his pockets
Found a bill and crushed it hard
He closed it within her fingers
As he got back in his car
He could see her tears in his mirror
Once she unwrapped the money
She called out, “It’s way too much!
Sir, you gave me a twenty.”

Chorus
He told her, “Life keeps making changes
It’s all up to you
You can’t control what life gives you
Only what you do
Sometimes good things happen
Though it’s kinda strange
When life gives you a blessing
You gotta keep the change!”

Verse 3
The pink slip from his bosses office
Meant rent this month will be tough
It’s a walk from work to his car
With a bankers box of stuff
And he worried how he’d tell his wife
About one more job he lost
When a downsize hits a firm
One more family pays the cost

Verse 4
In a church pew an aging lady
Sat beside him as he prayed
She said, “Once I was in your shoes
And a twenty saved my day
It helped me till I got on my feet
And then I received the news
Grampa left me a fortune
Now I’m giving some to you!”

Chorus
She told him, “Life keeps making changes
It’s all up to you
You can’t control what life gives you
Only what you do
Sometimes good things happen
Though it’s kinda strange
When life gives you a blessing
You gotta keep the change!”

Verse 5:
He jokes and laughs with his employees
And he helps them with their lot
He always gives them bonuses
And when they are in a spot
He tells them of his benefactor
Who said, “Give before you’re gone
When good luck falls in your lap
Don’t forget to pass it on.”

Chorus
He told them, “Life keeps making changes
It’s all up to you
You can’t control what life gives you
Only what you do
Sometimes good things happen
Though it’s kinda strange
When life gives you a blessing
You gotta keep the change!”

In verse 4, I'd say "sharing some with you" instead of "giving", as it was altruism, but I like the subject and the song itself.

Good job guys. This is really strong.

I really like that it addresses the idea of accepting help when it comes your way.
Few understand, and even fewer talk about, this important issue. Kudos.

@Joe. I like the suggestion...and thanks.

@Sketch. Thanks for sure. I thought it was a subject that we needed to address. I certainly agree that it takes wisdom and understanding be able to know how to accept help when its offered.

@Sam. Glad you liked it, thanks.

Yes, SW Joe, it is altruism but “sharing” is usually not used in everyday speech to describe these situations. I’ve given away tens of thousands and numerous cars but I never told the recipients I was “sharing.” It suggests that the giver is going to use it too. It doesn’t quite work.

Every once in a while a song or lyrics get into my head - this is one of them. They were playing in my mind as I was lying awake in the middle of the night. A message well written. It made me think, and think hard about what I can/should do.

Love it!

Thank you so much ,Andrea. That's exactly the response we were hoping for. Thought provoking songs have stirred me all of my life...and I am glad to have had a part in this one. Bunny

Yea know, Andrea, when I was working on it and finished it late that night, I dreamt about it all night and kept waking up with lyric lines running through my head. There’s a strange hypnotic effect about it. Weird.

The funny thing is - when it is some elses lyrics stuck in my head, it's usually because the message is meaningful to me. When it is my lyrics keeping me awake, it's because I feel unsettled, or unfinished. The first is more enjoyable :)

Hey Andrea, I was hearing music with the lyric lines. In my dreams it was being played in various venues or situations. I probably awoke about 3-4 times. It was intensely haunting. When I finally got up, I felt invigorate by the experience and said to myself, ‘What is it about this lyric?” I’ve never had an experience like that before due to a lyric. Strange...

I like the 'pay it forward' theme of this. And the lyric overall is strong.

'Grampa left me a fortune' felt a little arbitrary, and unearned to me. A little too Deus ex machina.

But otherwise, a great story, well told.
