All Fade Away
© 2019 Owen Hovenden

Link to music

Verse 1:
Birds outside my window
Fading, fading
Dreams upon my pillow
Fading away
Perfume of the pinewoods
Fading, fading
Memories from my childhood
All fade away

Chorus:
Names and the faces
Of people and places
Once held so dear
Now time erases
Jealousy and hatred
Love and compassion
All fade away
Lost to the darkness of yesterday

Verse 2:
Angels lying in the snow
Fading, fading
First kiss under mistletoe
Fading away
Mozart on the Steinway
Fading, fading
Taillights on the highway
All fade away

Chorus

Bridge:
Perpetual moment
The eternal now
A thread has been broken
And my life stolen somehow

Chorus
Lost to the darkness of yesterday

Hi Owen,

Nice string of images and delivery. The last line on the chorus is very jarring and it seems it is supposed to be, but somehow the major chords don't seem to fit the mood of the rest of the song.

Maybe try....
G........A
All fade away
Am..........B7............Em
Lost to the darkness of yesterday

or

G........A
All fade away
Am7..........Cmin6............G
Lost to the darkness of yesterday

On the bridge, I think you can come up with a stronger last line. The previous 3 lines are building nicely.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the input James :)

I tried out those chord sequences, but I prefer the current one.

I think the 'my life stolen somehow' line works as a summary. Without connection to your memories, your life has gone though consciousness remains. The song is about loss, and I imagine there would be some feeling of anger and helplessness to go with that.

Fair enough

>I think the 'my life stolen somehow' line works as a summary.

For me, it doesn't support the title "All Fade Away"...something being stolen does not involve aspects of fading away. All the previous lines are examples of things fading away and in the bridge lines 1 and 2 show things that don't fade away....line 3 is a bit off topic "A thread has been broken", but could work it's way in with the last line being about tattered/faded fabric of life...or something along the line of a fruit off the vine withering or dying/fading away, but "stolen" comes from a different line of metaphors....like having a song with sea images and metaphors throughout, and summarizing with a car crash...just something to consider.

This definitely conjures a wealth of images - memories that relate well with people.

A thread has been broken
And my life stolen somehow:

I was a little thrown off with "broken"
then with the next line, "my life stolen somehow" I thought maybe the song was about dementia. For me it works. Your explanation about loss works for me too.

@James thanks again for your thoughts, appreciate you giving your time and energy to my song. It works for me as is, so I'll leave it that way, but I do listen and consider your input.

@Andrea You are right about it being dementia, or similar symptoms. Thanks for the listen and the comment! :)

Another good one Owen. I like the changes from verse to chorus.
Excellent hook on the ending of the chorus.
Great lyrics as usual from you.
