Inside Her Heart and Out of Her Mind

Verse 1
It was a cold and rainy Caroline morning
As she climbed on that old Greyhound in Charleston
Tucked her ticket in her jacket, brushed her hair away
She closed her eyes tried to think ‘bout no one
Her face pressed so hard on the window it seemed
She felt raindrops touching her skin.
Her thoughts were racing like fast forward shows flashing on-screen
Weary and worn, she finally gave in

Chorus 1
She was leaving without really knowing
Where she was going or what she might find
And sleeping through the storm that was brewing
Inside her heart and out of her mind

Verse 2
She had a dark and stormy Caroline moment
As her fingers felt rough scratch marks and bruises
She had on her wrist and her arm when she pulled away
From all his cheating, lies and abuses
The rumbling wheels drove shadows out of her mind
And she tried not to remember
The knife, the blood, the gasp, the thud, and leave it all behind
That cold, rainy, Charleston November

Chorus 1
She was leaving without really knowing
Where she was going or what she might find
And sleeping through the storm that was brewing
Inside her heart and out of her mind

Verse 3
It was a bright and snowy Tennessee midnight
As she stepped out of that Greyhound in Bristol
A fresh haircut and new outfit, she faced a new day
Her reinvention continues until
The pounding in her heart and fire in her eyes
Comes forth then subsides and she’s kind
And lies, she once believed, succumb to the truth that abides
Inside her heart and out of her mind

Chorus 2
She was leaving without really knowing
Where she was going or what she might find
Now waking to the truth that is showing
Inside her heart and out of her mind.

Coda:
The knives and flames in her eyes
Stay hidden and won’t go away
Since she left on that Greyhound
That November day
