No more the rising sun

There's a devil on you back, boy
And he's tuggin’ at your soul
He'll weigh you down towards the ground
And put you in a hole
So heed the mind of this old man
'Cause when his work is done
No more riding free, boy
No more the rising sun

Chorus (I hear a Gospel choir):
The devil takes the high road
The devil takes the low
Every path and freeway
The devil knows them all
There's a price that you can't pay
And the day is almost done
No more riding free, boy
No more the rising sun

You're too smart for this old fart
You think you've been around
Lookin' down at the folks like me
'Cause we don't understand
But if you can't walk a line that's true
'tween the bible and the gun
No more riding free, boy
No more the rising sun

Chorus:
The devil takes the high road
The devil takes the low
Every path and freeway
The devil knows them all
There's a price that you can't pay
And the day is almost done
No more riding free, boy
No more the rising sun

(Not really sure about this 3rd verse)
Now, I often take the high road
But I sometimes take the low
Every path and freeway
I know just where to go
So pull a chair and sit right down
And we’ll have ourselves some fun
No more riding free, boy
No more the rising sun
No more riding free, boy
No more the rising sun.

Hi Mike,
You got a good lyric going here. What genre it fits may depend on the musical composition. It sounds country to me. I written a few like that where I can’t quite figure the appropriate genre. Read Re-Visions Of War and the genre comments.

I think the third verse works. You could drop the last two lines and finish with a chorus though. In its fourth line you may try switching ‘just’ with ‘know’. ‘I just know where to go’ works smoother with the other two verses.

Charles

This is interesting.
I like the roots/blues music spiritual vibe.

I suggest making verse 3 into a bridge.
But drop the last four lines and add a final chorus. (or ending)
But I suppose it will need two more lines to fill it out.
"'cause we're just riding free now; here in the rising sun"

- Sketch

This could be a reference to The House of the Rising Sun.

It's a good lyric. The 'this old fart' phrase felt a bit out though, too comedic for the rest of the song for mine.
But otherwise it's a good 'un! :)
