OVERPASS
Recorded in 2000 on analog 4-track

(you can hear some tape damage at beginning)

Went to the valley, tried to build an alley
They said 'you can't build a road there'
Went to the seashore, didn't wanna see more
They said 'you're gonna ruin our air'

I wanna drive real fast
Don't wanna see the beauty that's passed
I wanna build something that'll last
Building an overpass
Building an overpass
Building an overpass

Went the state park, tried to build a K-Mart
They said 'this land is not zoned for a store'
Went to Zimbabwe, tried to build it my way
They said 'our countries too poor'

I wanna drive real fast
Don't wanna see the beauty that's passed
I wanna build something that'll last
Building an overpass
Building an overpass
Building an overpass

Every forest is a little greener (greener)
Under concrete and steel
Every day is a little brighter
when seen through a guardrail
Hear the sound of my wheels

Went to my mother to build her another
She said 'build an overpass to the sky'
I didn't want to do it, told her to screw it
She said 'you don't need to know why'

I wanna drive real fast
Don't wanna see the beauty that's passed
I wanna build something that'll last
Building an overpass
Building an overpass
Building an overpass

To the sky (to the sky)
To the sky (to the sky)
Build an overpass to the sky to the sky
(build an overpass for me baby won't you please)

Well that's a bit wild and wonderful. I really like that intro though -got real mood.

Can't say it really speaks to me, but it's interesting!

Talk to Congress. They managed to get funding to build overpasses, bridges, and railways that go nowhere. But not in Zimbabwe. You got a good Bob Dylan type song going here. Keep working on it to get it more polished.

There’s an interesting topic. I do like the music in this one the best so far. Has a psychedelic feel to it.

I like the idea of being emphatic to corporate materialism.

This verse could be moved as the first to setup the "why" of the singer's motives

Went to my mother to build her another
She said 'build an overpass to the sky'
I didn't want to do it, told her to screw it
She said 'you don't need to know why'

This is the only anti-building verse and it seems it is rooted in some mother issues....maybe the character can be lover instead of mother and then motivated by a different kind of love...the female voice sounds more seductive than motherly, but does sound cool in the arrangement.

"build her another"....try reworking this line.

Thanks for sharing.

James

James
That was done purposefully - the point was why do people build unnecessary and destructive roads and other material things... they are rooted in serious psychological issues (see the current occupant of the White House) ... its supposed to be a seductive mother figure... Oedipus/Freud and all that...

Got it. Thanks for the confirmation.

Seems to me to be a good song that needs singing in a more conventional way...

It probably needs a Dylan 1966 Positively Fourth St type treatment - but showing how great a singer Dylan really is - that's hard to pull off!

Interesting take on the whole environmental thing, which I like. You have real imagination. Good lyrics, which tend toward Dylan in the rhymes.
