Break WIth You

What do you think? My band has arranged it so it has the same tempo and a galloping Americana folk rock feel. For now you're hearing a basement tape featuring me on vocals, acoustic guitar, telecaster, lapsteel and dollar-bill-in-the-strings faux snare drum.

About the writing process: I just finished reading Jeff Tweedy's bio where he describes his process of writing by way of 'mumble tracks'. This involves composing chords and melodies without regard to actual words. The melodies are initially just mumbled phonics and random non sequitur words. The important thing is to compose a melody. Then step 2 is replacing the mumbles with words that fit the meter and melody. Step 3 is organizing and replacing words until an idea or theme reveals itself. That's just what I did with this one.

Here's more on Tweedy's process: https://chicagoist.com/2015/12/03/jeff_tweedy_explain_how_wilco_write.php

Note - The video is composed of clips I assembled from "Carnival of Souls", a B-movie masterpiece that's now in the public domain. I was looking for visuals that set a mood, instead of telling a story. I want the listeners to make their own stories. You can find the whole movie on the Internet Archive. But that has nothing to do with songwriting. Just fyi.

BREAK WITH YOU
Words and Music ©2019, Charles McCullough

That that don’t kill you
Might just make you bolder,
That that don’t chill you
Is bound to leave a mark

Those who just take you
Turn an icy shoulder,
Those who just fake you
Will leave you in the dark

When the night falls
I wanna fall with you
When the night falls,
When the day breaks
I wanna break with you
When the day breaks
Ahhh yeah, ohhh yeah, mmm hmm

Doctors may nurse you
With their medication,
Poets may verse you
And set your pain to rhyme

Call and I’ll meet you
In your situation,
Know that I’ll reach you
We'll sing until we shine

When the night falls
I wanna fall with you
When the night falls,
When the day breaks
I wanna break with you
When the day breaks
Ahhh yeah, ohhh yeah, mmm hmm

Nice Charles! Got its own distinct vibe going.
That probably comes from the initial focus on the music.

Interesting to hear how you go about it. I've noticed in various discussions that there are many different ways people write, and even for the same songwriter different songs may come from different paths. I'm much like you in that the music usually comes first, and even if I do have a key phrase in mind, much of it starts as placeholders for lyrics.

This is definitely a mood piece. There are hints of story but as you said, mostly it's left to the listener to interpret. I like the chorus. Nice and simple with an emphasis on the sound, using repetition for effect.

Very nicely done!

Hi Charles,

I listened without reading the lyrics, and it sounded like a good song should, in my opinion. The hook/title was obvious and it moved along nicely.

I'm not so sure what "break with you" is meant to mean, in the context of the song, but it doesn't really matter in the long run.

Well put together and has a good feel.

Enjoyed.

Kel

Hey, Charles,
Excellent song and the lyrics fell right in place! Music is primary. I love the chorus!
