Let me set the stage:
You’re in this club, it’s ‘round midnight, and the main gig has gone home. This trio —sax, keys and bass, start to set up. So, you’re thinking blues. Then this sultry songstress enters. She looks in your direction and you see the sadness in her eyes, like she’s been jilted for the last time. She smiles, you smile. The bass leans over, whispering words of support. She nods. It starts with the bass, then piano and sax. She grabs the mike and from the depths of her soul cries out this song (see below). The entire club freezes and turns, mesmerized by her. But she continues. Eyes closed.

What Good is Love
Music by Jay David, lyrics by Charles M Anderson © 2018
AABA
What good is love
When you have lost your heart
What good is love
When you are torn apart
I had my chances
An my restarts
But my romances
Have lost their spark

What good is love
When he has gone away
What good is love
When you’re his yesterday
I had my lovers
And my dismays
But my recovers
Have left their mark

Bridge:
What love is grand when it no longer sings
You’ll understand when you’ve lost everything
I have excuses, I have regrets, but my no-uses have left their debts

What good is love
All you do is cry
When help from above
Has only passed you by
I have my sorrows
And my goodbyes
But my tomorrows
Have left my eyes

(Musical interlude repeating bridge)

What good is love
When you have lost your heart
What good is love
When you are torn apart
I had my chances
And my restarts
But my romances
Are my demise

Coda:
I have my sorrows
I have goodbyes
But my tomorrows
Have left my eyes

It’s lovely. Can’t wait to hear it as a complete song.

The composer and I have worked the music but it needs some areas refined and a studio edition. He’s be getting his studio gear latter this year and he’ll then make it ready for prime time. Thanks for the kind words.

When I first sent it to Jay, the composer, it was in the AAA format; i.e., four identical stanzas. When he put it to music and sang it, he intuitively changed the third one to a bridge. He didn’t even notice he did that until I sent back the rewrite! But he’s a blues/jazz guy. He also added the repeated stanza and coda. The music now is slightly jazzy but should be full blues. We’ll work it out after he gets his studio set up. Yea, you can hear the blues in it easily.
