The Best That I Can Lord
Copyright © 2018-2019
Joe Givens

Oh I've seen some hard times and trials in my life.
And lived through some heartaches and sorrows and strife..
I've travelled though darkness.. where evil resides..
But I'm doing the best that I can.

The best that I can Lord.. the best that I can.
The best that I can Lord.. the best that I can.
I know I'm not perfect for I'm but a man..
Whos doing the best that he can.

Though I may be tempted to stray from Your way.
I know You're there always for me..
And Your great sacrifice sets my heart and soul free..
It makes me the best I can be.

The best me I can be.. the best I can be.
The best that I can Lord.. the best I can be.
As long as You're with me.. I know where I stand..
While I'm doing the best that I can.

Oftimes I think my name should have been Job..
That old devil taunted him endlessly.
But The Lord had a plan for Job he didn't know..
And restored him for all to see.

God made Job the best man.. the best he could be..
Yes, God made him the best man.. the best he could be.
God loved dear old Job, who was but a man..
For doing the best that he can.

If we remember the story of God's servant Job.
When hard times and trials come our way
It won't always be easy but we can endure
For The Lord guides us through all our days.

He makes us the best folk.. the best we can be
His love and His mercy.. are all that we need
We may not always know God's perfect plan..
{sung slowly}
But we must do the best that we can.

Hi Joe, These lyrics started strong. I loved the first 2 verses and the chorus. For me, it turned when you brought another person into the story(Job). I think you can say the same ideas without adding Job. In my opinion, it would be stronger.

We may not always know God's perfect plan - a good idea for a verse.

One word change suggestion I will make is in verse 2:

'Though I may be tempted to stray from Your way.
I know You're there always for me..
And Your great sacrifice sets my heart and soul free..
It makes me the best I can be."

I am not sure about makes. Maybe shows, or delivers, gives...

Just my ideas, hope they help some :)

I respect your opinions.. But.. in this case, I wrote the song around the trials of Job. Therefore.. I don't see how I can eliminate those references to the biblical character. I'll have to think on "makes"

I remember little of Job, so that that influenced my suggestions. I may have to brush up on this topic for further considerations :)

Job was a very pious, rich and happy man mentioned in the Old Testament of the Bible.

The devil made a bet with God that he could make Job lose his faith. God said, "fine. You can test him how you will, but you can't kill him."

His crops were destroyed, as were his many sheep and other animals, also his wife and kids died.

His friends turned on him, but he never failed, even after his wife told him to " curse God and die" to be done with his earthly misery.

He refused. Devil lost his wager and had to restore to Job even more than had been stolen from him.

He never faltered and God was quite pleased with him (excuse the poor, if mostly accurate retelling of the old parable.)

I’ve always liked the book of Job. I often think of his story when I am sad or feeling sorry for myself.
It reminds me to never lose my faith.
As for the lyrics, I like them. I can almost picture the music and vocal melody because it flows so well.
Do you have a certain way you want to sing this? Or any music plans?
I’m thinking of a Fanny Crosby, old style type hymn.

I sang it acapella, but amr format wasn't acceptable here, and the mp3 coder was caca.

Think I found an mp3 recorder. If it works out, will post. Always looking for good collab though I'm not really a composer nor arranger; more of a singer/ songwriter, lyricist and top line writer. Thanks for the kudos sam. This song has a special meaning to me.

The big doofus in the pic is really me, btw, tho I'm about 80 lb lighter now.

I tried out for the X Factor talent show at the tv station but.. I forgot a couple of words of a song, so I didn't quite make the cut.
