I ain’t writing for radio play
And I don’t give a damn what they say
If four minutes is too long
Then I don’t belong
I ain’t writing for radio play

I’d much rather hear a true country tune
One about love or leaving too soon
Songs about life and the way we all live
Yeah that’s just what true country is

These days ain’t it funny how every hit song
Is sang by a ten who can’t do no wrong
The only time they’ve seen any time behind bars
Is when they forget to turn the auto tune on

I ain’t writing for radio play
And I don’t give a damn what they say
If four minutes is too long
Then I don’t belong
I ain’t writing for radio play

This new generation don’t know when to stop
They transformed what I loved into hick hop
Then turned around claiming to learn from the greats
While making the same ones roll in their graves

I’m guessing they’re not sure what a honky tonk is
They’ll pass on a bottle for a drink full of fizz
Why did I have to give up on all that I loved
When they’ll spend less time at one than Jones spent in hand cuffs

I ain’t writing for radio play
And I don’t give a damn what they say
If four minutes is too long
Then I don’t belong
I ain’t writing for radio play

I’ll bet you a million Hank never did it this way
In a back room on his knees what he did was pray
Giving thanks that he lived through another long night of beers
Now I’ve drawn the line and end it right here

I ain’t writing for radio play
And you won’t hear my songs from a stage
I’ll never be rich cause I write what I live
I ain’t writing for radio play

And I don’t give a damn what they say...

Yeah, re-reading this has stirred up feelings at how I look at the music industry nowadays.
Today's country music is basically pop. Country died with Johnny Cash in my opinion.
Pop music is dominated by talentless, auto-tuned divas who's sexually charged lyrics are sending horrible messages to our youth. Especially girls.
I sound like my Dad, 20 years ago. smh

Agreed Sam, it really irritates me when I hear many great singers not even getting a second look. If you are into real country music check out a guy name Mickey Lamantia, Awesome sound, guy is 10x better than any newer ones.

Ain’t that the truth Alan, yet most don’t care. I have a hard time understanding it unless they never liked the old stuff to begin with.

Alan, yes he’s great. A great female artist is Kayla Ray. I love her voice and the way she sings. Check her out as well, don’t think you’ll be disappointed. She lives her songs as well.

Hi MP,

I really enjoyed this. The only part I didn't get was the part about Jones in handcuffs. I don't know who Jones is, (I'm guessing it's not Tom Jones because he isn't Country) so the reference misses me. On the composition side of things though, I'm not sure if the extraordinary length of this line is either a ****-up of the extreme variety or a stroke of true brilliance.

Duh... George Jones got arrested for being drunk and disorderly at some stage didn't he... so true brilliance then!

Cheers,
Kel

Thanks Kel, you guessed it, George Jones. He was always in trouble for something back in his day. Appreciate the look.

Classic music will always be the best (in all genres).

Hopefully, there will remain enough who appreciate it to make new music of the same quality.

Great lyrics!

Absolutely Sam! I’ve got others as well if you are ever interested. Not mainstream but every bit as good. I’m a member on Mickeys page on FBhe does live music every Wednesday. Whiskey Wednesday he calls it. He actually replied to one of my comments the other day I was surprised.

Strong lyric M.P. Independent of the sentiment, it's just well put together and the feelings come through loud and strong. I'm not into Country so less passionate on the subject than you are, but the message comes through loud and clear!
