He’s been in bed for half an hour
Then I hear his feet coming down the hall
He claims mommy said it’s ok, but I know
She fell asleep some time ago

When he climbs up in my chair
I hate to think these days are ever gonna end
As I wrap my arm around him with a smile, he says..
Daddy your my bestest friend

I’m..so.. blessed and I’m so glad
My best friend calls me dad
I’m living out the very dream
I never thought I’d have
He’s living proof that life is good....
My best friend calls me dad

First one question than another
I love the fact that he confides in me
What comes from the mouth of babes..is amazing
And at times hard to believe

If I could I wouldn’t ever
Forget the sound of those little feet
Coming down the hall, to sit with me, on the nights
That he couldn’t fall asleep

I’m.. so..blessed and I’m so glad
My best friend calls me dad
I’m living out the very dream
I never thought I’d have
He’s living proof that life is good...
My best friend calls me dad

My best friend calls me dad
It’s the best job I’ve ever had
It starts when I walk through the door
And doesn’t end when I get back
I take pride in the fact
My best friend calls me dad

I’m.. so..blessed and I’m so glad... that my..
Best friend calls me dad

That is wonderful, I wish I'd thought of it, great write friend.

It's a strong write MP!

I really liked:
It’s the best job I’ve ever had
the timing of it, as well as the line itself.

I wasn't sure about "till" in:
And ends till I get back

should that be "when"? or "doesn't end till I get back"?

Having mixed feelings about this one. It is well written - as always:)

On one hand I love that feeling of connection portrayed by both the child and parent. It is sweet and tender.

On the other hand, it is odd to think of a small child as a best friend. Most definitely utmost love, but not best friend (my opinion and feelings).

I kinda thought this might come up and I was going to post before the song even. It isn’t about being your kids best friend and lacking to show them discipline. It’s more of a buddy thing but I thought this sounded better and hoped it would be taken as only a song and title nothing more. That being said I would guess if I wrote it about an older man and his son it would be taken better? Was going to make it a longer story but felt it couldn’t be cut enough to show their relationship from a young age to adult.

I didn't interpret any discipline themes, so that isn't an issue for me. I get the buddy idea (I called my oldest son Pal when he was little - because he was my little pal). That to me is not the same as a best friend.

It could definitely work for an older child and a parent.

I saw this topic title a few days ago and was looking forward to checking it out.
Another winner here. Good work.

I can really empathize with the lyrics. Great imagery.
The little feet coming down the hall. Climbing up in the lap.
The engagement of questions and shown affection.

And the part about something you never dreamed you'd have.
I know I wasn't ready to have children before they started arriving.
My second-born is as you have described.

I did get a little hung-up on the last verse.
Specifically the fourth line.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My best friend calls me dad
It’s the best job I’ve ever had
It starts when I walk through the door
And doesn’t end when I get back
I take pride in the fact
My best friend calls me dad
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

You are defining a time period with "start" and "end".
But walking through the door and getting back are the same thing.
Unless I am totally missing something here.
Perhaps the more potent image is of the re connection
and catching-up that happens when you get home. ???

Thanks Sketch! I know what I am trying to convey in that line but somehow the exact wording is eluding me. I have also thought about and started a rewrite as more of a progression to see if that works any better. Tbh I didn’t know if I’d make it through the first uear😂, that was a tough one. Thanks for the look.

G'day Mike,

I think this one jumps to the top of the podium for you. Great work.

Cheers,
