Had an idea. Has anyone thought of a rating system for songs? Maybe not a 1-10 per se, but a 4 or 5 star system? Some of my personal posts have over a thousand views but 6 to 8 comments, and I'm guessing that's not all that uncommon. How bout we add a star rating system? Not to beat a dead horse but many won't leave comments. So a star rating? Takes 5 seconds and you don't have to feel like you're not worthy. Only ask that people respect the system and realize if that's not their genre to not be foolish and have some respect for the writer. Not sure how hard that would be but then maybe people could sort by rating? More feedback is always appreciated.

People would need to write their rating as in "****" or "4 stars" or "4/5" or equivalent. There isn't an option in our bulletin board software for that function. I would note that some (many?) views are from "guests" who do not have a TSF login and therefore won't be able to leave any form of feedback. Not against the idea though.

Owen, I was unaware that people could look look at posts without signing up. Guess that explains it. Guess that kills it then. I was looking from an anonymity basis.

This is interesting.
I'm seeing a different purpose than ease of reply.
Each star could represent a level of excellence.

The tendency is to be positive and supportive to everyone.
And there is certainly a place for that. We want to be an encouragement
to those who are new to this. The more seasoned writers want a
more detailed critique. We have learned who wants that.

I'm thinking the star system could be most helpful to those giving a
detailed evaluation. Perhaps five aspects that build on one another.
This could build off of the How to Rate a Song (is that what we call it?)
That is already in place. Or maybe a star rating for each aspect. ???

That's a good take on it as well. Since the site isnt set up to support it though the only way would be to set a criteria and use that. The two of you seem to be the best/most honest reviewers. Originality, title, ohers?

RDM had written a very detailed step-by-step method.

I went back and pulled out the four key points that I saw.
Here they are below.

How to give feedback on other people's songs

Here's a boil-down of the first post above by RainyDayMan.
His post is a good full explanation. This is intended to be a handy tool of bullet points,
as a checklist to use. His post contained this helpful checklist:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- What was your overall impression?
- What was the best part?
- What needs improvement?
- Any specific suggestions?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Read and understand the entire post from RainyDayMan.
Then use this list as a reference guide.

It may require a different rating system for the lyrics and one for the recording.

But I suppose I am over complicating this. Maybe...

Five Stars ***** = I love this!

Four Stars **** = This is pretty good.

Three Stars *** = Not too bad, good effort!

Two Stars ** = Okay, but needs improvement.

One Star * = This needs help!

I like that. We all have different ideas of what is good, style wise etc. I just thought had it been possible that it could have lead to more feedback. Owen and yourself know more about the structure etc of what actually constitutes a song. I myself am still not comfortable critiquing someone else's work. Suggestions yes saying what I think is bad not so much.

I think the idea of a rating system is to try to force people to give more feedback. Some people posting may be up for hearing that their song is liked/not liked, but some people may not want this. If the rating system were to be employed, possibly it should be an option you can choose when you post. I would appreciate hearing an honest critique along with encouragement. On the flip side, I don't feel that I have the knowledge to offer technical advice to anyone - maybe that is common.

Andrea, I guess I felt that a rating system would give more opportunity for some truth. It is a way to stay anonymous while being honest. If 50 people say they like it and 3 hate it well chances are it's a good write. The issue seems to be ongoing. Many feel they aren't one to critique others works and I get that. I've left feedback before only to get snide responses. So I dont much care to offer it anymore. At least not on a critiquing level. I'll just say it's ok and move on. You will get the feel for those that are ok with critiques and those that aren't over time though. As a writer we all need to realize that everything we write is not gold. The only other option that I can see is to somehow open up feedback to visitors? If that's possible? It seems as if that may be where most of the views are coming from. PS. I also think what you may find is, you may be in agreement with what a moderator says, even if you dont post it, knowing if you did it gets ignored or dismissed as irrelevant. Those sorts of things are what leads to the lack of replies, I believe. But, that's just my opinion, and we all have those.

It does appear that there are a lot more visitors than members.

I am guessing most join the forum as a way to connect with like minded people, as well as, to hear feedback/suggestions (good or bad). It certainly helps the improvement process.
