Technically I didn't write this, but I changed up the lyrics and added to the chord progression so much I think it sorta counts as songwriting. I would call it a co-write, except the way it came together was very unusual.

Here's the original version sung by the author:

...and here's the version I came up with, with me singing:

I heard this guy singing in a local restaurant. Since I don't fancy myself a singer, I'm always on the lookout for good voices to maybe do my stuff. This guy had a HUGE voice for country, so I took one of the business cards by his tip jar and looked up his site at home.

He had this song on his site, and I liked the concept, but for some reason I felt compelled to rearrange it as I heard it, so I did. A friend told me don't send my version to the guy, he would think I was a nut, but instead he seemed quite flattered someone was that interested in his tune! And it sounds like he's making tracks and some great connections in the local music scene, so maybe a nice connection was made.

Now to get back to things I pen 100% myself!

Grandpa's Fiddle

Grandpa's fiddle
All the stories it could tell
about a boy raised on a farm
and the family he loved so well (Thinking of changing this line}
Grandpa sure could raise hell in his day
I never knew him as that man
but the fiddle he sure could play

Grandpa's fiddle don't sound like it used to
His hands are tired and aching
and his mind is going, too
When I think back on good times we had together
I wish grandpa could fiddle forever

Every time I'd visit
that small Missouri house
me and grandpa would sit and jam
for hours on the couch
I learned a lot about bluegrass,
love and life and laughter
and a whole lot more about being a man,
Jesus and the hereafter

But grandpa's fiddle don't sound like it used to
His hands are tired and aching
and his mind is going, too
When I think back on good times we had together
I wish grandpa could fiddle forever

Every gospel tune
he knew like his own name
And they always sounded better
when he picked up his fiddle and played
Raised four daughters
and reached the age of 90
and he still loves my grandmaw
Tells her so nightly

But grandpa's fiddle don't sound like it used to
His hands are tired and aching
and his mind is going, too
When I think back on the good times we had together
I wish grandpa could fiddle forever

Thanks for sharing that.
Good to see collaborative rework projects as well as new things.
I have a collaboration in the works as well. First one.

I like the concept and some of the imagery here.
"Grandpa's fiddle" is already evocative, and you build around that nicely.

But I'm having trouble finding the rhythm of this. The syllable counts seem very uneven. If you have the melody sorted out and it all fits, then no problem! Otherwise you might try to even it out a little.

So for example in v1 the first 4 lines seem fine (though you might swap family > life to make it fit better).
But when you get to "Grandpa sure could raise hell in his day" I'm expecting that to return to the same space as "Grandpa's fiddle" and it just doesn't fit.
And why does v1 have 7 lines but v2 8 lines?

So I would work on tightening the structure and then adjust the lyric to fit.

For some reason I didn't get the notifications on this thread. Thanks for the input, everyone!

Without thinking about it, I've changed the line to "the man we loved so well." This was because I was about to do it at an open mic and found myself blanking on what the original line was! So it rewrote itself as I tried to think of it.

I think v2 has eight lines and v1 has seven just because of where I broke up the text.

A couple of weeks ago I took a trip to Nashville, and partly because of the encouragement I got here, I had the nerve to get onstage at Douglas Corner and do open mic night! Nobody threw anything, so that was good. Back down here in Atlanta I've done a couple more open mics, and I dare say people seem entertained.

Due to this, I've started working on more tunes. I think I've reached the final draft of another one this weekend, and have a couple I had in mind for female singers in the chute, as well. I'll post them soon.

Thanks, everyone!
