This 2008 song started with my melody and chorus lyric. It was payback for the good works of a great musician's charity in NY and N.O., The Jazz Foundation of America.

I was a client, and so was my co-writer, Jimmy Norman. I heard Jimmy talking about the JFA on Delphine Blue's radio show on WBAI in NY. I hadn't heard of Jimmy, but it turned out that he wrote lyrics for the monster hit Time is On My Side (actually written for Irma Thomas, and covered first by trombonist Kai Winding before the Stones picked it up) and also collaborated with Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley.

I reached out to Jimmy at his gig. We wrote the rest of the song the night Barack Obama was elected in '08----with his TV announcing the returns in the background.

(There's a link to the JFA's video about and featuring the song on the Gospel Lyrics page. The video featured Jimmy, a 'choir' of all JFA clients, and stars like Quincy Jones, and went worldwide. We made NO MONEY on the song to date [Jimmy Norman passed away in 2011])...

The final lyric (with the slower tempo and key change) is the way it was originally written by myself---and I intend to keep it in future versions. It's not sung on the video.

Also, the verse heard on the video was a special one-time thing written by Jimmy and his then-MD, Sean Harkness. It was intended for the public service video financed for the JFA by Marc Roth. It will not be used again by myself, unless I find a good reason.

YOU'RE MY FOUNDATION
By Joel Fass and Jimmy Norman
(C) 2008 Exemplar/Nude Dude (ASCAP)

(Chorus)

You lift me up
Show me the way to stand
You're a helping hand
Of inspiration

Rising from you
There's nothing I can't get through
In all that I'll ever do
You're my foundation

(Instrumental interlude, stanzas):

Gave me hope, the belief
I could stand once more
So I found the strength to try
I believe we can be
All we want to be
And you're the reason why

'Cause you lift me up...(etc.)

I was lost in the realm
Of a thousand fears
A dark place where nothing grew
Then you came with the light
Now my future's bright
there's so much to look forward to

'Cause you lift me up...(etc.)

(Slower and in G---mod. from E/E Min):

Lift someone up
Show him the way to stand
Be a helping hand
Of inspiration
And he'll rise up too
One day to say to you:
'In all that I'll ever do
You're my Found- (rit.)

Wonderful song Joel! That is a great number to have to your credit. And I'm sure you are proud to be supporting the JFA at the same time.

Awesome!

They saved my life----you don't know the half of it.

Question: I read elsewhere that the address troy@....etc. is no longer functional. How do I post the compressed file of the JFA video? The rules say links are verboten on this section. (I also tried 2x to post a PDF lead sheet. It came out as gibberish w/an error message. Is there some other way? It opens just fine from my computer.

Here is an mp4---which I think is a compressed file of the JFA video: (edit: it's too large. Here's the youtube link---if that's permitted:

(And thanks for the kind words. I have irons in the fire, and this song will do something eventually---I'm sure of it...)

I'm going to make a file from a gig at Smalls this past Jan. 27th that concludes the show with this song, and make it available both here and as a demo for any interested recording/performing artists. That rendition is the true one, including an instrumental interlude omitted from the JFA version, also my concluding lyric. (I also want to edit the glitches from this show and use the edited version as a demo for my songs in a well-received live performance).

If anyone wants to hear the song in that pristine version, they can go to http://www.smallslive.com and go to the date. (You may have to go to the 'archive' link at top and enter my name). It's the last song on set 2 on the video...

We have some limitations on this version of the forum software. The results of loading files here varies wildly depending on your browser & version.
Because of that, the most reliable way to post something is to link to another site, rather than trying to upload the file here on TSF. So a link to Youtube, or Soundcloud or Soundclick or many others is the preferred approach these days.

Thank you. That clears up some confusion.

I still want to excerpt the song from that Smalls gig, and use it as my demo to be posted here and elsewhere, also sent to the artists I have ways to reach out to. The man who produced and financed the JFA video project has ownership of the video---and that could lead to legal problems if I used it w/o a release from him. I'm trying to get that release from him along with a statement that my co-composer (who co-produced and sang on the video) did not sign away any future royalties to this man---both signed on a 'real' (read: non-emailed or otherwise digitally delivered) page that could be, if need be, presented in court...

I have an mp4 file of the performance. How do I upload it? I don't see any way, here at least...

No, we arent set up to upload files directly anymore. I would suggest uploading to a site like soundcloud, or soundclick or similar first. These do require registration, but they are free. Then you could post a link to your song here on TSF.

I'm already set up at Soundcloud. Guess I'll try that, thanks...

I must check this page out more often. This is just beautiful. I'm in awe of the singing, so soulful. Impossible to criticise anything about this. I love it.:)
