I am imagining this with a bluesy / Tracy Chapman kind of sound

Wandering Boy
(c) 2014 Owen Hovenden

Link to music

Wandering boy, where your feet at?
Wandering boy

Wandering boy, where your feet at?
Wandering boy

Dust of a nation on your feet
Cursed and kicked by the people you meet
Leaving footsteps in the sand
For us to follow, the best we can

Wandering boy, where your head at?
Wandering boy

Wandering boy, where your head at?
Wandering boy

Words of the Gospel on your lips
Preaching salvation and friendship
Open heart and an open hand
Dreams of freedom for every man

Wandering boy, where your heart at?
Wandering boy

Wandering boy, where your heart at?
Wandering boy

Words of wisdom spoken clear
Glory and truth for all to hear
Stand united move in peace
Sing together “we shall be released”

(fade out)
Where your feet at? Wandering boy
Where your head at? Wandering boy
Where your heart at? Wandering boy
Wandering boy

Hi Owen,

Good to see you writing again. I like this and could put a vocal melody and strumming to it after reading your description (bluesy, Tracy Chapman style).

My only suggestion is this: I'd like to see the order as feet, head and then heart. Not sure but I like heart as the last impression to leave with the listener.

Nice writing!

Troy

I will overlook ending the lines with a preposition. LOL At first I thought it should be "Where's your heart/head/feet at" as "Where your feet at" sounded kind of uneducated. BUT, considering the context of the song it works kind of magically. Wrong, yet so right. :)

I read through it thinking of Tracy Chapman and it really seems like it would work great. I kind of agree with Troy on ending it with the heart. All things seem to end up at the heart in some way.

Great writing.

Randy

Thanks Randy! Appreciate your indulgence on the hanging prepositions! :). Yes the "where" rather than "where's" was deliberate. Glad you think it paid off.

Finally got around to recording this one.
Unfortunately the quality is not great - lots of clicks etc but hey at least you get to hear the music! :)

Nice tune.

God...I hear so much with this.

I also liked the idea of the heart being the last thing.

Kinda brings it all home.

Great lyrics!!!!

Wow! Full on treatment eh? That could be good! Beyond my abilities at the moment though. Glad you liked it!

I like it.

The lines about 'dust of a nation....etc.' are the strongest for me. (I myself might've wrote 'hate of' or 'spurning by' a nation. Just my 1st impression.

It's open to interpretation as to whether the wanderer is Jesus or a follower----'preaching salvation' being a dead giveaway.

I listened to the track. It was fine. I myself would have used a slower tempo---this being said after only 1 listening.

It's a good song with a fine concept and metaphor...

Thanks Joel.

I think I'll stick with "Dust" because that goes with "feet" and "wandering", whilst also allowing for the negative connotations.

It's meant to be open to interpretation as to who it is about and in my mind it could be even wider than that.

You may be right about the tempo. I have a bad habit of speeding things up as I get familiar with the song.

Thanks for listening and the comments! :)
