Ableton 'LIVE 7' Software

I personally use this software and decided to post these discussions Hank and I were having regarding Ableton 'LIVE', in case anyone else comes along using the same software or considering the purchase of it some day.

This is the PM from Hank that started this discussion:

Troy,

I bought an M-Audio Fast Track Pro today and a Shure SM57 mic.  It works, but I'm having some issues.  I know you're familiar with Ableton and I think my questions are likely about audio interfaces in general if you aren't familiar with the Fast Track.

1)  When I have the Fast Track hooked up it shows that it's recording onto Ableton, but I don't get any sound using the ASIO drivers I downloaded.  I can't hear the metronome or playback.  I'm guessing that since it's bypassing my onboard soundcard that I need headphones or monitors hooked into the Fast Track unit?  If this is correct, would I be able to hear the metronome through the Fast Track?  I monkeyed around with the settings, and if I pick DirectX (I think?) I can get sound but the recording lags terribly and sounds horrible.  I'm guessing I don't want to use that setting.

2)  When I export from Ableton will I need to have the Fast Track hooked up?  I would think so, but I really don't know.

3)  It only records on the left side.  The guy at Guitar Center told me that is normal, and that if I wanted stereo recording I would need two inputs.  He also said that USB mics won't record in stereo, but both of my USB mics record in stereo.  This makes me wonder if he knew what he was talking about.  Do I need two inputs?  If not, how do I record in stereo?  I messed around with it a little, but was unable to get a stereo recording.

Any tips for using an audio interface?

Thanks for your help,
Hank

First of all, congrats on the new equipment! The Shure SM57 mic is one of the best values and most used studio mic of the last 30 years or so. Good choice with plenty of uses.

I don't know anything about the M-Audio interface but am happy using my M-Audio 'Ozonic' model that has a MIDI keyboard and mic preamp with phantom power. I will have to check into your 'Fast Track Pro' device to learn about it.

I think my sound card feeds into my Ozonic interface. I then output into my monitor amp which powers my speakers. I plug my headphones into the ozonic too.

I will post a series of images screen captured which will show all the settings I am using for audio recording and general setting with use of my interface.

When recording with a single element microphone, like 98% of all good microphones, there is only one signal that is captured. You then need to process that single recorded mono track so it is split between LEFT and RIGHT.

The Guitar Center dude is correct in that if you want to capture something in true Stereo, you need 2 sources... or 2 microphones listening. Just like this. People who are deaf in one ear can not hear stereo. They capture sound with only 1 ear (Like 1 Microphone). People with hearing in both are sensing  info from ears on opposite sides of their heads. Same situation with  recording TRUE stereo, which requires 2 mics.

so................... The stereo reverb effect will save the day!

Check out my array of vocal effects pictured below that I use. Keep them in order from left to right in Ableton. Dial in all of the setting I use as shown in each pic I am sharing here....... and work from there to find what is best for you and your microphone, etc.

Thanks Troy.  We had chatted earlier about getting a better sound out of my recordings.  I talked to some guys that have great home recordings and they talked me into an audio interface.  The general consensus was that my songs, guitar, and vocals were pretty good but the recording and mixing stinks.

I took a look at your screenshots.  Once I get to where I can actually hear what I'm doing I'll take a good close look.

I have done some more research.

1)  It looks like I'm going to have to get some headphones and/or speakers that I can connect to the interface.  In hindsight this probably should have been obvious, but it never occured to me.

2)  I'm still not sure about this one.  It shouldn't be hard to figure out once I get up and running.

3)  I see what you're saying here.  I guess I wasn't dealing with true stereo with the USB mic, but getting the same sound out of each speaker.  I'll study your screenshots closer.

This past year of songwriting and recording has been a ton of fun.  I have always been more fond of the journey than the destination with my hobbies.  I know I have a long way to go but it has been a blast.

I got everything working today.  I recorded some guitar stuff and made an mp3 out of it.  It sounds great compared to my earlier recordings.  I'm going to do some more tweaking to see what happens.

It was kind of a hassle getting all this figured out, but it wasn't near the hassle that I expected.

Thanks for your help Troy!
