It’s written like a love song, but the lines have a specific meaning relating to the progress of the journeyer. Case in point: the line “And sought until his hands were sore” refers to the commentary of the wise men who came upon the Majnun on his knees sifting through the sand. They ask what he was searching for and he replied Layla. They laughed and said she was of pure spirit and not of this world. He said he searches everywhere for her that perchance he shall fine her. He who seeks a thing with zeal shall find it.

The “With” in the verse 3 helps the first line wrap to the second line and matches the beginning of verses 1 and 5.

“He hunted for her one night”. He’d like to look for every night, but he’s pulled away by worldly obligations.

I sing the chorus out quite readily. I’m anxious to hear the singer sing it too.

Thanks for your suggestions, Charles
